Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Felt F75 -- before and after (with pics)

This was what it looked like shortly after I got it; I immediately swapped out the stock handlebar / stem for Oval Concepts ones, and added Tacx Tao cages and Shimano 105 pedals:

In this configuration, it weighed right under 20 lbs.

Below is what it looked like after the first round of changes, including a new saddle (Specialized Toupe), new seatpost (zero-setback Thomson Elite), new crankset (SRAM Rival), new wheelset (Easton Circuit), and tires (Michelin Krylion Carbons):

It weighed 19.5 pounds after these changes.

Here is what it looks like now, with a new handlebar / stem combo (Syntace F99 / Deda 215 Shallow), back to the stock setback seatpost, new shifters and RD (SRAM Rival), new crankset (Shimano Dura Ace), new fork (Deda Black Magic), and new brakes (TRP 920):

The weight with the latest configuration:

That is 17.6 pounds for the metric-challenged; so it ended up about 2.5 pounds lighter than what I started with.

Future changes will include a Dura Ace cassette, a Thomson Masterpiece setback seatpost, a set of Schwalbe Ultremo R tires when the Michelins wear out, and a lighter wheelset. It has been fun piecing everything together, but I think I will stop after these changes and focus on getting a Lynksey titanium frame for another build.

Suggestions / comments are welcome; thanks for looking.

Well played sir....well played.

Who knows...maybe we'll cross path on the Pinellas Trail...if you ever get this way...

So....what did you do with all the stock components?

The motor weighs between 175 and 220 pounds, depending on how much I ride / workout

I usually ride on the backroads near my house in Tampa, with occasional trips to San Antonio or Flatwoods. I have never ridden the Pinellas trail; I should check it out one day.

The old parts are currently piled up in my garage; but I just got the girlfriend a road bike with entry level components and will use the 105 stuff that came off this bike to upgrade hers.

Unfortunately, riding in style (or riding at all) has not been an option in the last week thanks to the nasty weather around here lately...

I like your setup a lot (Infact I have your thread over on WW bookmarked)
What do you think was your best pay off in terms of price vs. better/lighter component.

It has to be the fork. I bought it new for under $100, and was skeptical at first about how it would ride. Also, it being a Deda product, I wasn't sure how accurate the claimed weight would be. Well, not only can I say that the bike rides much better after the fork swap, but also that the claimed weight of 370 g was dead on. The old fork was heavy (600 g) and very solid, to the point of being harsh, and the new fork rides so much smoother with no loss in stiffness as far as I can tell, even when sprinting.

How does the stiffness of that frame compare to other's you've tried? Are those Deda handlebars 26mm clamp size? Your next upgrade might need to be wheels. Other than that your bike looks great!

The frame is not super stiff; I see quite a bit of sideways movement in the bottom bracket area when climbing out of the saddle. But I don't get any chain rub so the flex is pretty much irrelevant. Overall, it is a good frame that won't beat you up.

The Deda bars are indeed 26mm clamp size, mated to a Syntace F99 stem.

These wheels have been good to me; they make for good training wheels. I am thinking of entering a few races this summer, and I will think a little harder about upgrading the wheels then (maybe a set of carbon tubulars...)

Frankly, you are not missing much in Flatwoods; it is a 7 mile loop through the woods and is very flat (as the name implies). I ride there when I am biking with my girlfriend as she is afraid of riding in traffic.

I have an F75 aswell and contemplating giving it a complete overhaul (SRAM Rival groupo, SOUL S4.0s, etc.) and was wondering if it is truly worth it or should I just save the money and put it towards another bike (Cervelo S1 or BMC Streetfire)?

I say go for the overhaul instead of getting another aluminum frame bike like the ones you have listed, unless you have a problem with the fit of the F75 frame and a new frame would improve your comfort on the bike. I don't think you will get a performance advantage with a different frame.

the pinellas trail is about the same... the 20 mile loop I take has about 7 bridges over it so you can get your heart rate up pretty quick and they are a good change of pace.

again...great looking bike...enjoy riding!
