Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Diagnose my rear derailleur problem

I have around 500 miles on my CAAD9 and I just took the bike in to get a quick tune up. Everything is shifting smoothly except for one gear.

When I am in the second highest gear my rear derailleur makes a ticking sound and actually moves front to back about a quarter inch when pedaling. It is incredibly annoying and I would prefer to not make a trip to the LBS again if this is a simple adjustment. It doesnt do this in any other gear.

Should i adjust the limit screws? cable tension? anything else?

thanks in advance!

Don't touch the screws.

What I do is back the cable tension all the way off, then retension until it works right. For some reason, that works better for me than fiddling around with the tension from its current position.

I tracked an intermittent ticking sound in mine down to a sticky chain link - bike upside-down, pedaling backwards watch the chain coming off the lower derailleur gear. If a link is bound-up at all it will hold an angle instead of straightening out immediately when it rolls past the gear.

Which gear is your "second highest"? Do you mean the second smallest cog in your cassette or your second biggest?

I find the park tool website an excellent resource for RD tinkering:
