Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Suffering

Today's ride was the first ride that I actually liked suffering. I was on several hills that I liked the pain and I actually didn't want it to end. I think squeezing the handlebars helped me deal with the pain.

I guess the next phase is to start hating myself.

BTW, I think the Hammer Gels really helped me.

Clif Gels definitely help me out.

I was definitely hating myself for choosing a standard crank over a compact to do the climb I did on Saturday morning.

I wasn't regretting it on the way back down though.

If you had the strength to squeeze the bars you weren't really suffering.

Waste of energy as well. Don't grab your bars. Just rest your palms on the top while climbing if anything.

Good points, Busta and Data. I've never squeezed the bars like that before. When I was squeezing, I was thinking, this is a total waste of energy....

If I wasn't suffering, I was definitely hurting, but it felt good to hurt.

Pain is inevitable; Suffering is not. Suffering comes from desire for the pain to quit. Accept the pain; the Suffering stops.
