Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

HEED or GU without Sodium?

Hi,

I need to replace electrolytes and potassium on a regular basis, but my body cannot tolerate sodium. Does anybody have a home made or packaged solution?

Thank you,

Check out Endurolytes by Hammer Nutrition. I believe there is sodium in there, but it's less than the standard drink mixes and supplements. Hammer doesn't believe in Sodium because they think we all get too much of it anyway... if you really can't have any, look at the ingredient list from the Endurolytes, leave out the NaCl, and make your own creation.

I mean, I can't take any more sodium than what I normally get in the course of a day. I can't take the additional sodium found in most energy drinks.

Endurolytes are an electrolyte supplement. No calories. Sodium is the major ingredient: 40mg/capsule.
Hammer HEED drink mix has 60mg per scoop (normal serving is two per 24 oz bottle) for 120mg. The equivalent amount of Gatorade would have about 300mg of sodium!

Hammer gel has 25mg per serving (90 Calories). That's pretty low. The same amount of brown rice syrup has 30mg sodium. A GU of the same size has 55mg sodium.

BTW, all this info is on the web. Although it was interesting to look it up. It's suprising how little sodium is in Endurolytes and how much is in Gatorade. A regular salt tablet is ~160mg.

I am also curious why you "can't tolerate" sodium. You have to have some or you'll die.

I am on a very low sodium diet and I make my own no Sodium sport drink using Maltodexrin and Koolaid for a little taste. I'm doing 4+ hours rides of 60 miles with 7000 to 10000 feet of climbing, with a few large bottles of the mix, a bottle or two of water, and one Cliff bar with 150 mg of Sodium. Bananas are a good source of Potassium

The reality is (1) that people's Sodium loss by sweating varies by as much as 10 times between individuals (2) 1000 mg/day of sodium is enough for most people (3) Most people consume 4000 to 6000 mg/day because it is added to virtually all processed food as a flavor enhancer and preservative

i would simply suggest sticking a banana in your jersey pocket. eat the banana, throw the peel to the side of the road. the peel is biodegradable so its environmentally friendly

SISU Hydrade, full electrolyte replacement at regular strength of 2 scoops contains 100mg Sodium in 750ml of water. Is that too much? I use it at 1/3 strength for any rides under 2 hours.

BTW 2 scoops also contains 1000mg of Vitamin C as its primary antioxidant, a necessary ingredient I think for endurance athletes.

HTH

Thank you,
"Electrolytes exist in the blood as acids, bases, and salts (such as sodium, calcium, potassium, chlorine, magnesium, and bicarbonate)."
https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/002350.htm

Sodium is an electrolyte ... it's one of the main ones ... so if you're looking for an alternative to sodium, I don't think you're going to find it.

And what specifically gives you the impression that your body can't handle sodium? What happens? Do you break out into hives? Do you ache all over? What specific physical manifestations are there that make you think you can't handle sodium?
