Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Race on virgin pavement - no cars !!

They are building a ring road around our city and one of the local clubs has arranged a 30 k ITT before they open it to traffic.

You don't need a UCI license either because day licenses will be available for a " citizen category" and even a "fixie category" (as long as your SS has 2 breaks).

If you live in southern alberta you do not want to miss this! Should be a lot a fun !! Deets are here: (PDF)

That sounds like FUN! Wonder if I can borrow a road bike in time... (I just have a touring bike, 26" wheels and not-so-fast gearing). I was eyeing one of the finished sections just the other day and wondering if I could sneak in some riding on the unsullied pavement

Oh that rocks! Wish I did not live three thousand miles away.
+1 to the construction company as well, most (the one I work for included) are not so cool.

There was a similar race in eastern PA years ago when an extension was added to I-78 between Bethlehem and Hellertown. I still remember going out one night to pre-ride the course when there was a full moon. It was a fun race, and I'm glad that I did it when I had the opportunity. One big difference, though, is that this race was run as one big mass start with all the categories together.

I live reasonably close, but have never raced anything. I'll mention it to some friends, maybe carpool down. Does look fun, but I'm not sure how serious a rider you should be to show up. I and my gear might feel a bit out of place.

WE had something similar when they were extending the 210 freeway here in so cal.. Caltrans was so slow in finishing the project, it was several months of clear riding on a 4 lane freeway with not a car in sight.. It was bike nirvana..

There was a major bridge built in Toronto during the depression across a river valley linking the Eastern part of the city to the downtown core. On the opening day, as the ceremonial parade (of cars) lined up, full of local dignitaries, to cross the bridge, a lone ride burst from the crowd and cycled across the bridge becoming the first official vehicle to cross the bridge.

Here in Taiwan there was an entirely new North-South highway built. As they completed sections of it they held races on it. It was the first time I sprinted towards a toll booth.
