Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Worst Eyesight, who Found RX Sunglasses?

Okay, so I run into entire buildings if I'm not wearing my glasses. My prescription is above 7.0 for myopia. So far, I'm being told by several places they can't do prescription cycling sunglasses with that much a correction needed. Can't do that much of a curvature (that most cycling glasses have). Contacts are not an option for me. Yes, I used the search function. Lots of info, but I'm trying to avoid calling or e-mailing every glasses place in existence.

Anybody with vision this bad that found RX sunglasses they like? Made by ?? Approximate cost?
I just want single vision for distance, nothing fancy. Ideas? Thanks!

You can get regular prescription glasses made using sunglass material. I had a pair a while back. I'm thinking about getting the photo-changing ones.

I'm also extremely myopic (-5.25 for right eye, -5.50 for left eye). I also hate wearing contacts because I have to be extra careful with them, mostly due to a past bad experience with them.

With such a high myopia, it's impossible get sunglasses that have "Direct RX". Instead, I think you should opt for glasses that have prescription inserts, which are called "Insert RX". I'm currently using a Redhawk by Optic Nerve. There isn't an extreme curvature on them so girls and guys like us can see through the sides without having that blurred out feel.

You can find out about Optic Nerve glasses here: https://www.nerveusa.com/index.php?

Hope that helps!

I wear Ray Ban Wayfarer IIs with prescription lenses. The lenses are plastic but not not high index plastic so they are thick at the edges. The black frames do a good job hiding it. I have had them for years and they work great for bicycling, boating, on the beach, driving etc.

I think Rudy Project RB3 will handle that high an Rx.
My wife also has a very high Rx number had to go with the RB3 as no other
cycling glass would accomodate it. The nice thing about the RB3 is the flip up sunglass lense
is interchangable, you can replace with any of the various lenses you like.

I have and use daily Bolle Parole with inserts. I don't love them, but I like them just fine. Bonus: Changeable lenses. On some rides that start dark I wear yellow, then swap later as teh sun comes up.

I'll bet just about anything fits in the inserts.

I wear almost as heavy duty glasses (6.xx). I was willing to spend every penny of my $1.5k FSA fund to get one pair of glasses, no dice. I had to settle with a few different pairs of glasses. My favorites are the clear and the black iridium like lensed glasses. I have transitions but don't like them (they don't change if I have a cap on, or some shade on my eyes).

I got inserts for some brand glasses I forget but the inserts hit my eyelashes. Those Mapei team glasses, where the earpieces fold in.

If you find something let us know.

Totally off topic, but I used the Bolle Paroles for years. The main thing I didn't like about them, especially compared to the Rudy Ekynox sx, is the nose piece on the Bolle did NOT stop the shades from slipping down my nose. Rudy's system is far superior.

They do slide a bit. I don't notice it for tennis, but for cycling I put those little sticky pads on. It raises teh glasses on my face, and stops the slide.

If I could find a Rudy dealer with them in stock around here I'd be tempted....

My last pair were photo changing. They were ok but not great, due to the fact that they're thermosensitive not light sensitive. Which means during the cold, cold winter months they weren't so dark when I was outside, but as soon as I would come indoors they changed to a super dark shade. Seriously, during the winter was the only time I ever saw a huge color difference.

Still better than nothing on a bright sunny day though.

I needed prescription sunglasses, bifocals, yikes! My optometrist ordered a number of different styles to try out and after some failures we settled on the Liberty Biker. I should note, he did not like dealing with the Rudy Project so we did not try those.

Mine fit well; The entire frame, including the nose piece is made/covered with a very nonslip ”rubber” feeling material. The ear pieces are lined with a different rubber material insert that in theory grips more when warm so it won’t slip off. If you look at the inside of the ear piece on the right you can just make out the insert that grips your mellon. They stay on great for me and offer good wrap around protection. They come with a strap that snaps in place to hold them on if you what that, I don't use it.

Here is a stock photo of the frame.

My feelings exactly.

To stop the sliding, I bent the arms to snug them up and wrap around your ear.

I bought some "rec-specs" from sams club, they were under $200. They have a removable strap that I only use when kayaking.
Don't know what my prescription is. I'm near sighted, probably medium, I can see the clock on the opposite wall but can't see the hands.

lens are much darker than shown in the pic.

If yu can live without cutting edge fashion Liberty Optical sells the Rec-Spec line. Rec-Specs have been around a long time and can take about any Rx out there. I mean, I'm sure there's limits but they handle alot of astigmatism with mine.

I've used these..

..for a few years now. They look better in silver but they're not Rudys.

However, I put them together at a Wal-Mart Optical for about ~130$ with Rx polarized lenses.

I broke a pair in a crash and snapped out the lenses to recycle in new frames and didn't feel a financial kick in the ***** when I left the broken frames on a guardrail I had just smacked.

+1 for the Rudy Project RB3. I wear them for cycling and my prescription is almost as bad as yours.

I don't know my perscription, but to read 12pt type, it has to be 12" away. Looking into the links posted.

I've had transitions for ~15 years, and they work great unless inside a car.

How does the RX thing work when you buy the glasses separate from the prescription? You buy the sunglasses from a seller, they provide (uninstalled?) lens that a local optical center then builds with your prescription then inserts into the frames?

I had these for a while and could not be more pleased. I am near sighted and my Rx is about 6.0.

https://www.bicyclerx.com/product.php?code=rp-ho

I also use them as normal sunglasses not just for cycling.

I got some from HERE, and they rock...my script is over 6.5 in both eyes, they charge a little more but they can make them...This is the only style they can go thinker in, I would suggest calling them, that is what I did and I had them with in 10 days.

I tried the Rudy Project Ekynox inserts, but they didn't work because the lenses were at a pretty severe angle. Regular prescription sunglasses are OK, but they don't provide much wind protection.

So I ended up with Vistana sunglasses that fit over my regular prescription glasses. They come in various sizes and look fairly decent. They're only about $50

Talk to your optician. Different labs have different capabilities. Wrap-around lenses require special equipment and skills.

I have RX inserts at 8.5 for the Performance Bike glasses called "Procyon" and they work fine. They are the high index lenses though.
