Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Saturday dawn ride up Mt. Greylock, MA with pics...

I tackled Mt Greylock early this morning, the highest peak in Massachusetts, 3,491 feet. The road to the summit has just been repaved and has only been open about 2 weeks, can you say new pavement euphoria?

Here's some pics from the ride:

Getting an early start:

Out earlier than the fisherman, Pontoosuc lake empty...

Heading up the Greylock summit road:

Halfway up with the trusty steed:

Starting to get foggy:

Riding above the clouds, about 1 mile from the summit:

A little Greylock lesson:

Massachusetts Veterans War Memorial Tower at the summit:

Yours truly:

3490 ft:

Hopefully somebody enjoyed looking at these, if you're interested in the ride report I posted one over at my blog.

Have a great weekend of riding!

Why'd you stop 1 foot from the summit?

Just kidding....looks like a really nice ride.

No North Road decent, I didn't have time to make it into a loop this morning so came back down the new road also. Great ride, and thanks TheKillerPenguin for all the pre-ride tips!

Nice ride. I plan to ride Greylock later this summer. Is there any cost for traveling up the mountain or is it an open road?

Nice to see the road is repaved and open...

I am waiting for the registration for the race up Greylock to open...

It is one of the BUMPS hillclimbs...

I may get down that way next week and take a crack at the hill so I am familiar with the road...

Thanks for sharing...

Great pics...must have been lots of fun descending in the fog...

I've been up Wachusett but never Greylock, I see you're doing the PMC, fun weekend if you can handle the fundraising requirement...

Check this out if you're looking for a well supported practice ride a few weeks before the PMC...

I rode Greylock this weekend... The new road is absolutely incredible. There is not a single divot, bump, or piece of gravel on the road. Ascended from the South and descent via the North into Adams. The descent was great. I have never been on a road with that many hairpins that I could open up the throttle without fear of potholes or gravel.

Go do this ride!

I am heading there right now...

I think I am going to start at the north end of Greylock up and over then turn around and come back...

If I am feeling good maybe east on Rt 2 to Zoar Rd then over to Kingsley Hill (supposedly one of the steepest miles in the US)...

Never ridden Western Mass...

It should be fun...
