Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My new BMC Streetfire

Well I haven't started one of these threads before because I'm lazy at taking pics but here she is:

The goodies:

2009 SRAM Rival
Ritchey Classic Bend bars
Ritchey WCS stem
Ritchey WCS seatpost
Fulcrum Racing 7 wheelset
Fizik Arione saddle

I've logged close to 700 miles on it since I got it back in late April and I've been really impessed with it so far. It's a little heavier than my cabon Orbea but a lot of fun to ride, and I have a more aggressive set up on it than the Orbea. The Fulcrum wheels are heavy compared to the Williams System 19s on the Orbea but they're pretty sturdy considering some of the potholes I've hit.

Cool bike. That Competitive Cyclist deal is pretty sweet for $1500.

I thought it would get to post #20 before anyone noticed, thanks for spoiling it.

So be honest, doesn't that fancy tube/lug connection around the seat post allow excess flex? It sure looks like it wouldn't be as stable as the "normal" method.

^^^

BMC has been doing that for a while, and their frames are known to be solid.

might be a place where you want flex though, part of the reason the new madones have that crazy seat post is to allow for flex as sort of a suspension, and the stiffness is mainly in the bottom bracket.

For vertical compliance I could see how that design would help, but it's the lateral stiffness I'm having issues with.

Nice ride - and it's looking better each time I see it. For me its getting time to replace several components, cassette, cranks, hubs, etc. and I'm beginning to wonder .............

It's been pretty stable thus far, haven't had any issues yet even when putting hard efforts in on the saddle.

awesome bike! I have a streetfire a year or two older than that with 105 and I love it. a lot.

very aggressive, very responsive, and surprisingly comfy. I'm just thinking about wheel upgrades to take some weight off myself... not sure what to get though. The rival is probably like 2/3 lbs lighter than mine too... good deal!

I haven't weighed it but the Competitive Cyclist site claims a bit over 16lbs but I suspect it's around 17 and a half.

Yep, the small single light variety. Come winter when I ride in the dark of pre-dawn hours I'll get something brighter.

Competitive Cyclist was very helpful with all the questions I had because I was somewhat skeptical of buying a bike online.
