Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First iPod ride... not as bad as I thought!

I've always had iPod phobia on a bike. Today, tired of riding alone and with a 50 miler ahead of me I strapped on my iPod. After two or three cars... it was really no big deal. The only time I nearly crapped myself is when a pack of crotch-rockets zipped by me at about 100mph. Apart from that... it was pretty awesome. I stayed on long country roads... I wouldn't do it in major traffic probably.

My main problem with them is not so much cars, it's dogs. Some don't bark when they take off in pursuit, particularly the larger breeds, and I've gotten accustomed to listening for their clawed feet on the pavement . . . so that I know when to kick it up to 400W.

Can't stand your own thoughts?

Mental toughness. Ride without, it just distracts from enjoying the pain.

My own thoughts get me in trouble... and I'm always in pain.

I ride with just the right earbud in and I've never had any problems with getting startled by passing vehicles

Thoughts don't get you in trouble. Actions do. Learn to enjoy the pain that's where improvement comes from.

I use my MP3 on every ride since last year. I live right outside NYC and it is congested compared to most parts of the country so I only use earbud in my right ear. I can hear cars coming on my left. Works well for me.

Has anyone ever been cited for this? I know in most states, it's not legal to have both earphones in, but it's usually ok to have one. I personally would rather hear the bike and the birds than music, though myself, not so much. Besides, it's a no no in my club.

If by iPod you includes all the alike MP3 players, then yeah, why not? Just turn the volume down and I have never had trouble hearing the nearby traffic.

Why ipod folks always think ipod is like the only source of digital music? Creative nano rocks !

iPod has pretty much become a generic term... like Kleenex. This is aside from the fact that the iPod is a superior digital music player in every aspect. I think everyone knows what I meant. And though I love the sounds of nature, blah, blah, blah,... every once in a while some variety is nice. Especially since 98% of my rides are solo. I'm always working when the local groups rides are going on.

+1

As long as you can still hear everything around you fine, I don't think it's an issue.

Most group rides don't allow them. Best way to stop the chatter is to pick up the pace. They can't talk when there breathing heavy.

To twist a phrase of Groucho Marx I would not ride with any group that would have me. I ride to get away from people, the iPod just makes it that much better. Ear buds in both ears, volume up.

i like wearing my mp3 too it drowns out the sounds of screaming motorists when they say things like get the eefffffffff off the road! i'm like road whaaaaaaaaaaaat lol. and it helps my temper which allows me to wave and smile instead of the one finger salute.

gave an extended ( time wise) salute the other day and at the stop light i could see the dude taking off his seatbelt boy did my adrenaline get jacked. but he pussed out and stayed in the car. good for him because i've been sharpening my skills lately!

Agreed. It's illegal to ride with earphones. Not allowed in my club either. I usually ride with friends and we chat while riding through the scenic canyons in Malibu. No reason to listen to music and miss out on the sounds of nature all around.
