need new tires...
so whats good that people around here recommend? im currently still running the bald stock specialized mondos. i had a flat once due to a 2mm piece of glass that punctured the wheel to the tube! should this even happen...thats a dinky piece of glass!? i guess something with more tread (or just something WITH tread for that matter) would be nice too so i feel more confident taking corners
anyways, something red/black would be nice and flashy on my bike =). $30-$40 range per sounds ok to me too.

Many people like Michelin pro race 3's because they handle very well and have good grip. The downside is they wear rather quickly.
My favorite tire is the conti GP4000S - plenty of grip, low rolling resistance, and lasts a long time. I race and train on these tires.
Both of these tires cost ~$50 MSRP, but can be found as low as 50% off if you keep looking.
To re-iterate, tread is useless on road tires! It actually decreases cornering traction and increases rolling resistance because the rubber deforms into the tread pattern. No tread means the tire squirms less and rolls faster.

Flats are going to happen with any tire. With more flat protection built into a tire you usually get an increase in rolling resistance from a stiffer tire and ride quality suffers.
I personally like Vitoria Open Corsa's the best for ride quality or Vitoria Diamantes for a little more millage and flat protection but still a nice ride. I get maybe 1 flat per tire every 4-5000 KM.

man so many decisions.
i guess i was just surprised that such a tiny piece of glass was able to dig a hole in the tire and hit the tube.
seems like no tread is the way to go. ive already ridden 1000+ miles on these mondos...not exactly sure how long a tire is supposed to last. but i sure as heck dont want to find out bombing a hill
hmm too bad GP4000S isnt in red/black! but black chili is tempting...or maybe i cave easily to advertisement?

I was a little skeptical of them when I first felt the tires in my hand and they felt kinda thick, like Gatorskins.
But then I took those GP4000S tires for a spin and damn - they really are all that. We'll see how long they last tho..

Definitely not on anybody's "bulletproof" list, but so far I'm pleasantly surprised with the Vredstein Fortezza Tri Comp on my road bike. I've only got a few hundred miles on them, but they seem to be holding up really well.

I just wore out my cheap-ass Forte's (cord coming through at 900 miles) and have new GP4000s' now (lbs - $50 ea.). Bicycling did a "long-term review" thing on them the other day - rated them just a hair below the pro-race3 for handling, but said they were good for 4000 miles + even on the rear. I'd be satisfied with that....

Michelin Krylion Carbons...not quite as tank-esque as the gatorskins or armadillos, but sufficiently light and good for a training tire. Planning on picking up a pair soon myself.

In the price range you mentioned the Michelin Krylion should keep you rolling pretty good and I believe they have some with the red stripe.

Buy the conti 4000s from PBK, using the code "USARBR" to get an extra 5% off their already low prices and free shipping to the USA. They were as cheap as $25 or so back when the exchange rate was crazy good, probably $35-40 now.
BTW, OP, those specialized mondo pro tires were the most flat prone, fastest wearing tires I've ever had on a bike. Getting one flat on them in close to 1000 miles is a minor miracle given my experience. You don't need the heavy-duty flat protection tires like gatorskins or armadillos if you've only had one puncture with mondo pros.

FWIW - I just switched out a PR3 after ~3000miles, half the time up front, and the second half on my rear. It had a hole that was making me a little nervous after a flat I got a month back, and I was starting to see the cords on the sides, but not bad for a tire thats ~$33 on PBK.
I like the PR3's because I care much more about a tire that inspires confidence on descents and tight corners. Sure I've had a couple of flats (actually only 2 on the road in 3000miles), but all tires will flat in the right circumstance. You deal with it when you're out there. Good handling is just more important to me.
