I've just started this (dare I call it a) hobby recently and I already find myself pining to build up a stable. I have a CAAD9 that I love but I was considering getting another bike for rougher (C&O to start) trail riding. I was thinking a Ti Cross bike.
What would you go with? Ultimately, I'm sure your decision would rest on what you do most frequently with your bike though I'd wager that almost everyone here would choose a roadie as one of their choices.

1. '07 Bianchi HOC 928SL, '09 Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLR, SRAM Red, /w support vehicle (I have 3/4, the one part I'm missing is not reasonable IMO, but so isn't your question, Two bikes? Get real...).
2. Custom Reynolds 953 steel bike with S&S couplers, Lightweight Obermayer G3's, SRAM Red, /w support vehicle when I land in Mallorca or wherever it is I'm going.
or
Calfee Bamboo bike for a week just to see if it's really rideable.

If I had to be limited to two bicycles, I'd probably go with ....
-- Machak, my Marinoni Ciclo.
-- A heavy-duty touring bicycle ... perhaps something from Thorn.

If that's the case, then I'd go with the touring bicycle mentioned above, and ... possibly a folding bicycle.

Id like to eventually have a matching garage. Either
BMC Team Machine + BMC Track Machine
or
Cervelo R3 + Cervelo P3 Track
For now I'll settle on my older Tarmac and FTP.

I have what I need in trail riding comfort and speed.
The other bike I'd keep is my titanium Marinoni Sportivo "Randonnee."

I went flying down some fire roads with my CAAD9 a few weeks ago. The bike absorbed the road very well. Kinda got me thinking about their cross bikes.

Road: some flash (but not outlandishly so) road bike along the lines of Look 585/ Speciazlied Tarmac Pro, kinda thing.
CX: a lower end model that I could use for: getting somewhere, commuting, shopping, trails, stuff like that.

Basically what I have now:
1. A racing carbon frame bike (currently a Ridley Excalibur)
2. A fast tourer/light randoneur-type of bike, for extra long rides, credit card touring, brevets, commuting etc (currently a Specialized Sequoia)
I would have to say farewell to
3. The Planet X 'cross bike.
Just because I love road cycling the most and would hate to be without a backup.
