Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

About to buy some DV46UL Clinchers...

6'2" 195
Moderate climbs on my usual routes
'Tried the Mavic SLRs -- Great spin-up, wonderful flat speeds, climbing felt strange to me.
'Hoping the DV46s at 1390 grams will give some love on the climbs while keeping the high-points of the SLRs.
'Like the durability/stiffness/general rep Reynolds 46s have from others in these forums.

Anybody here riding the 46UL Clinchers? Would change it if you could / totally happy with your choice?

'Just doing my last bit of checking before pulling the trigger.

I don't have the ULs, just the DV46Cs (from before they made the UL clinchers, I believe.) Mine weigh 1480g (and I only weight ~170lbs), so not exactly the same thing but I've been extremely happy with them. By far the best bike upgrade I've ever done (other than my recent frame purchase, of course.) They climb fantastically, seem to be plenty stiff, and I was really surprised that the speed-up, especially on flats/slight downhills at 25 - 30mph is very noticeable.

I'm 6'0 145-150 lbs.

I looked at the '08 Reynolds DV46 clinchers, '08 Zipp 404 clinchers, and '09 Mavic Cosmic Carbone SLRs when I was shopping for my hoops and decided on the Mavics.

The fact is, I climb so slow (10-12mph on 7% climbs) that I've found no difference between the SLRs and some hand-built (1450g) clinchers that I was using. The SLRs are noticeable heavier than the hand-built wheels but so choice when going > 25 mph +/-.

The one thing that turned me off about the Reynolds, and the only reason why I did not end up getting those, was the carbon braking surface. I swap wheels a lot because of the 3-season weather up here. Combined that fact with the amount I ride, the Reynolds would have been a big nuisance for me.

If I lived in a sunny climate or rode in only good weather, I would get the Reynolds--no question. Plus, they have the perfect rim depth IMO because you can use 60mm tubes, which are readilly available. With the Mavics and Zipps you have to use valve adapters (total pita) or get 80mm tubes, which can usually only be found on the Internet.

No doubt. I was amazed at how little of a difference there was to pop the SLRs up from 25 to 30+ on flats. They really shine up there. The spin-up speed was remarkable to me as well.

I put my Kyserium SLs back on after riding them a few days and it felt like my bike was bolted to the ground in comparison.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like with my climate and routine, the Reynolds will soon be on my bike. Carbon braking surface is no issue here / rarely swap wheels.

martymc,

I've been eyeing a set of DV46c uls for a long time myself. Where were you planning on getting them? Did you find a deal somewhere?

I've seen new 46ULs on eBay for as low as $1700; however, I want to opt for the RAP (Reynolds protection plan 3 yr extended warranty). To buy that from Reynolds, the wheels have to be purchased from a dealer.

As far as dealer prices, I've came across a few (3-4) places selling them down in $2000-$2100 range (vs the $2750 MSRP). One place in OR had them for $1971; however, their distributor sold out Tuesday and does not expect more in. Their other distributor was more expensive -- putting the price around $2100-$2200.

I'm hoping my LBS comes back with a comparable price as I would like to support them; however, I don't feel compelled to pay $750 more + tax.

You seen them any lower from a dealer?

I have not seen them lower than that. I've only seen them $2200+. Edge 45 + dt 190 + spokes of your choice is around that price too....
