Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your weekend ride - first weekend of June!

Are you riding anywhere interesting this weekend? Any events, fascinatingly scenic places, visiting friends, etc. etc.? I believe it's a long weekend in Australia this weekend.

I have no plans to ride this weekend unless ... 1) The weather clears on Sunday; and 2) I am completely finished packing ... except for packing my bicycle, of course.

Riding from the coast to as far up the Mt. Baker Ski area as we can get. Should be interesting as it will be my longest ride to date.

I started my weekend early and did a very pretty 53 miler from Anchorage KY to Shelbyville, through lots of beautiful farms. No sustained climbs, like the guy up above claiming he's gonna do 103 miles with 8000 feet of climbing. That's a lotta climbing in Maryland. Anyway, the hills and hollows and ridges down here make for climbing up short hills and flying down their back sides, and doing it over and over and over all day. You can't get into any sorta pace or rhythm, and it beats you up.

Here's a few pics - I put more info and more pics on my blog www.recycledcycler.com

I was wrenching tonight, finally caught up with the 80's and got levers with hoods for my brakes, and repacked the steering bearings while I was in the garage. Monday I changed the small ring, and repacked the BB bearings. Should be good to go... test spin went well.

Next weekend I'm in the MS tour...

Leaving in a couple of hours for two days on the Blue Ridge Parkway:

Today: Out and back from Rockfish Gap (Mile 0) to about mile 45, then down into Buena Vista for lunch, and then back UP to the BRP and back. Should be about 100 miles. Stay overnight in Waynesboro.

Tomorrow: drive to Buena Vista and pick up from there, going south, probably to Peaks of Otter and back. This takes me from the lowest point on the BRP in Virginia to the highest point in about 13 miles. Then down the other side and back again. About 80 miles.

My regular bike is in the shop so I'm doing it on an older, heavier bike with a triple. Bleah...

Riding the Tour de Brooklyn sunday. 21 miles at 15 mph

But I get to bring my camera and THE BOAT

Apart from that, I have a few networking events tomorrow, and might run into a REALLY old friend of mine. Then after the ride on Sunday, I might do some server maintenance and then head out to Hoboken to help a friend of mine with his PC. So I'm booked like whoa

Today I woke up early and did a solo 60 miles on a route that I have never done before. It was beautiful.

Tomorrow is 40 miles - either a hammer fest with the team, or an easy ride. Depends on how I feel when I wake up.

After being sick since Wednesday I couldn't stand it anymore... I put up with the wife's " You're stupid, you'll never get rid of that cold if you go out riding", yeah, whatever.
Got on the bike and felt real good, tearing it up and over the rolling hills of one of my favorite routes. I was feeling so good I decided I'd take a different route back home that would add about 10 miles to my ride.
Stopped at the 1/2 way point D&D for a small coffee and muffin, before heading back towards home.
About 25 miles into the I started not feeling so good. Maybe I should have listened to the wife? By 30 I knew I should've listened to her, my head was pounding and every muscle in my body was in agony. Stopped twice for gels and water and mostly rest. Felt like hurling.
For the rest of the ride every little incline was my enemy, there were a couple I seriously considered walking the bike up, but I didn't. About 9 miles from home it's literally all downhill so that was nice.....
Finished the ride, 47 miles in a little over 2 1/2 hours. I was surprised that I was able to average 20mph which is about my usual speed for this ride.
Going to take some advil and get on the couch now.
Hopefully feeling better tomorrow so I can get another 30 or so miles in.

BTW - MarkWebb, nice photos of your ride!

I rode the Mesquite Rodeo Ride today. The longest route is a Metric Century. But I also rode to and from the ride, so that brought it up to 81.2 miles. 13.3 mph average, for those interested in slowness.

Out on the road:

Here's how you ride a Metric Century and get the workout of a Mile Century. You take a sound system along. The trailer itself isn't so heavy, but throw a car battery and a couple of woofers in, and you've got a workout. This would be Bikin' Mike, ( www.bikinmike.com ). I don't know him, just recognize the trailer. I've ridden some of his rides, too.

A sign we don't see much even in this area:

I've always read that alligators range "as far north as Dallas". I've wanted to see one in Duck Creek, but no luck so far.

Just got back from the Columbus Tour de Cure! Couldn't have asked for a better day weather-wise. Route was gorgeous... through wooded areas, out in the country, through smaller towns/neighborhoods. I loved every second of it. Also helped that the event itself was extraordinarily well run and organized, plus there was a massage tent and catering by Outback Steakhouse. Rode with 11 of my friends and we had a hilarious, amazing time. Go Team Awesome

We ( member Leinad and myself ) went to central Ohio Amish country today. This is one of Leinads favorite rides and he has tried to get me on it for awhile and today was the perfect day to do it. 55 degrees and sunny to start, very little, if any wind and temps warming from there to the hi 70's. It don't get no better!!

This ride starts in Apple creek and follows the backroads, first to Winesburg from there to Walnut creek. In Walnut Creek we stop at a resturant called Rebecca's Gourmet bistro for oatmeal bannana walnut pancakes (yummm!!) I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the area. After that we head farther south to Charm, were the real climbs begin, onto Becks mills too Salito and then millersburg, this stretch is about 8.5 miles and I don't believe there is 50 feet of flat road the whole way, one decent produced a desire to go back up and do it again but we didn't (I topped out at 47.5mph, how about you Gary?). Millersburg is home to one of Ohio's many Rail-trails and this one is unique in that it is shared with the local Amish and their buggies, half the trail is designated for buggies only, we used this trail to get back north, the roads here are not that dramatic so this is a nice way to cover some miles and not have to worry about traffic. The trail goes through Holmesville and Fredricksburg, from there its back to Apple Creek.

The place to park is Troyers Bakery in Apple Creek and as an after ride tradition it was inside to purchase an assortment of Pies and goodies, nice way to cover the cost of a nice parking space. The scenery is beautiful and the sensory experiance is quite unique. If you ever want to try it I'd be happy to post the roads.

At breakfast in Walnut Creek..

A very familiar sight today

15% up ahead...

Dan and the horses

Me on some hill (my ass looks huge )

Me again...

If you want your butt not to look big, you need to quit riding up hills. You're building up too much muscle.

Saturday:

53 miles trying out three roads that head up into the mountains west of here. Two were good climbs, but turned to gravel roads after a few miles (maps always seem to leave out little details like that), the third I've done before, but I went up aways again to get the climbing miles in. Love the 45 mph descents...

One funny thing - winding down after 45 miles or so, this dog (border collie or something) pops up out of the grass by the road and cocks his head staring at me, like asking "is it on?". I smiled and shifted gears "yeah, its on" - took off at a sprint and he raced along behind me for a couple of hundred yards before dropping off. He never went for my legs or anything, I think just wanted a good run.
