Hmmm. Was this such a good deal after all?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hmmm. Was this such a good deal after all?

So a few weks ago I ordered a Cannondale Six 105 from a store in the uk (it was £1250 reduced to £1080). The store also had a pretty reasonable price for shipping the bike out to me here in Japan (especially as tax would also be removed).

After waiting a week or so and sending a few mails they told me that they had actually sold out but if I was willing to pay an extra £50 they would 'upgrade' me to a CAAD9 Ultegra (Priced at £1450). Basically I get the £1450 bike for £960 after VAT was removed saving £490. I rekoned this was a pretty good deal so I went ahead with it.

Of course now as I wait for my bike to arrive I wanted to get some opinions. I guess the frame is a downgrade as I loose the carbon back end of the Six, but the CAAD9 frame seems pretty well regarded here (and I like the color better )

But I do get full Ultegra instead of 105... That can only be good I guess! The thing I'm not sure about is the wheels. The six came with Mavic Aksium Race and the CAAD9 comes with Shimano RS10. Is this a downgrade? The tyres I guess must be a downgrade as they are the same but the six ones have 'pro' after the name )

So did I get a good deal or was I better off with the six for 50 quid less? Either way I saved a packet over what I would have paid for a bike here in Japan. But I'm obsessing as I wait for my bike to come.

Either way, you're ending up with a pretty nice bike. There are pluses and minuses with both, but I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. I can't say I really rate Aksium's over a RS10 wheelset.

The RS10's and Aksiums are fine, lower-to-mid level wheels. Nothing wrong with them but they aren't terribly light or expensive. I would prefer the Aksiums as I think they are more durable but others will certainly feel the opposite. Though this is apparently the area of the bike that was compromised in order to reach the target price point, they won't hurt you in the short run.

I personally like the CAAD9 frame better as I am not a fan of mixed material frames. Plus you get full ultegra instead of 105 and you got it for cheaper. I think you ended up better off.

Awesome,

I can't wait for the new bike to arrive! The weather has been so nice around here and It'll certainly beat getting about on my Japanese sized folder (so small my knees hit the handle bars).

The only other concern is that I also went from a tripple to a double. Living here in the mountains that's probably gonna kill me while I build up the old muscles. But hey I need the exercise
