Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Calculating average mph...

ok, so I failed math several times in school....so for those of you who are not sos challenged....

There is a local climb here that is 1.75 miles with an average grade of 13.5%. I only mention the grade to draw attention to the difficulty. The current time trial record holder is the owner of a local bike shop and his time was 14.11 in 2007.

My question is simply...given the distance and the time he completed it in, what would his average miles per hour be?

14 minutes 11 seconds is (14 / 60) + (11 / 3600) = 0.236 hours

1.75 miles / 0.236 hours = 7.4 mph

Translation: The idea behind all mathematics is first converting all components into a common numeric standard to achieve a computational result. The 14 minutes and 11 seconds had to be converted to the decimal (10 based) numeric format, with the hour (60 minutes, 3600 seconds per hour) as the common base reference. The miles were already in the decimal system. So miles divided by time = mph.

Or something like that.

The ride. I can figure out the math in far less than 14 minutes.
