Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Don't drink from your "Ammonia" bottle

Been dealing with a pesky dog on one of my routes so yesterday I carried a "water bottle" filled instead with ammonia.

About 30 miles out, I was making a turn onto a side road when the driver of a car stopped there motioned me over. He was lost and asked me for directions. I helped him out and he pulled off, still distracted instead of reaching for my actual water bottle, I grabbed the ammonia bottle and took a big swig. Thank God I did not swallow! I realized almost immediately what I had done and spit out the ammonia from my mouth. I then vigorously rinsed out my mouth repeatedly with water from the correct bottle.

I was fine except for some chemical "burns" to my tongue and inside of my lips. I can't believe I was so stupid as to forget I was carrying an ammonia filled bottle.

From now on I think I will stick with plain water, dogs or no dogs

This wasn't nearly as funny as I was hoping, since I thought by "ammonia" you meant urine.

if it was your intention to spray the dog with ammonia, then it serves you right.

You know exactly where the dog is, and can't address either the owner or modify your route...?

I guess you could get some pepper spray. And don't mix it up for your Binaca.

I always thought the solution for mean dogs was traveling at top speed when nearing their home.

I think if you were going to spray the dog with something, you should've sprayed it with water...but ammonia - damn. Rough digs.

Here's to that!

Pepper spray's the way to go though - ammonia can cause permanent damage, and likely won't be delivered accurately via the water bottle targeting system

I hate it when they live on the middle of a hill. And I swear those three dogs know it and set ambushes.

There are 3 dogs living on one of the steepest hills on one of my regular loops. I credit them with my improved climbing technique. If they hadn't been out there chasing me every time I hit that hill, I'd still be paperboying up that climb at a turtle's pace.

I'm with you Romans; if you are attacked, the attacker is fair game (dog or otherwise).

Say that after some dog costs you surgery, a month or two in a sling, and almost kills or cripples you. I say f*** the damn mutts. If they're out loose, anything goes. And you're lucky if you have health insurance.

Wow... Just wow...

If it was a dog that was chasing me I'd carry some treats... Throw them down every time and eventually befriend the dog who would become my ally along with my pet ferrets Kodo and Podo.

Train him to wait for you like a kid and an ice cream truck. Then he can joyously hit your front wheel and send you flying!

Happy landing.
