Changing chain rings
I currently have 53-39 and 12-27. A friend of mine has a 50-34 with an 11-25. He says that he has a higher high gear and a lower low gear than I do. If I wanted, could I just change the rings on my cranks, or do I need an entire new Crankset.

Keep on climbing
Your friend does have a higher high and lower low gear then you do.
You can't just change the chainrings; a 34-tooth ring simply won't fit on a standard double crankset (which is what you have). You need a whole new crankset.

Ask him how often he uses the gear that is bigger than your 53x12 if you want to see him stutter.

You could replace the 39 with a 38 and the 12-27 with an 11-28 and you would have a lower and higher gear than him without replacing your crank. You win!

yes he may have a lower and higher gear but you have closer spaced gears which may be more beneficial depending on the terrain.
