Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hammer Voler bibs vs. Hammer Bergamo bibs

okay...the verdict for me is in....I have been a big fan of Hammer products for some time now...I still remember my first order coming with a virtual cornucopia of free supplements and products...I still think they have some of the best customer service available...super friendly and very knowledgeable...I own 3 pairs of the Voler bibs(in various stages of decay from use)...I've worn them for the Hotter n Hell Hundred, 2 years in a row and was very comfortable both times...I've always thought they were a bargain at $50 so I was a bit leery when I saw the new Bergamo bibs, but decided to give them a try.

Today was my first ride with them....a short hour ride that started off nice but turned ugly when a thunderstorm cell moved in and the winds went to 30+ with gusts near 50(a headwind of course) and the rain hurt when it hit you....but I digress.

How were the bibs??....let's just say I will be ordering another pair tomorrow morning...as far as sizing....I ordered a large, as that is what I wear for the Volers, and the fit was spot on for me....I like the straps better on the Bergamo's...a bit wider than the Voler....I also like the leg grippers better on the Bergamo's, they are nice and snug without pulling on my skin(if that makes any sense)

but the capo di tutti capi is definitely the pad....it is MUCH better IMO than the Voler's....it has more density to it and just feels far superior in the saddle....granted this was a relatively short ride, but they felt better from the get go, and stayed that way.

so, are the worth the extra $30??...IMO the answer is definitely yes....are the Voler bibs still an excellent buy...the answer is still yes.

now here is my shameless shill

if you decide to try either of the Hammer bibs or any of their other products, and you haven't ordered from Hammer before...PLEASE click on the red link in my signature down there to get yourself a 15% discount(and I will get a referral credit)...you will get your order and as a first time customer you will also get a welcome package of free stuff to go with it....I use the Hammer gel(I get the big bottles and put it in the flasks)...and I also use the Endurolyte caps when it's really hot and they work like magic for me.

either way I really do think the Hammer products are some of the best values out there and I will continue to be loyal customer.

I just got my Short Sleave Hammer Jersey(Voler) today. Damn it's nice for the money! Full zip and great fit for very reasonable. Glad I bought two of them..... And another pair of the Volers. Glad to hear you like the Bergs.

last year the Voler bibs went from red legs to black legs...and I liked the switch...but to me design is far down the list compared to comfort.

Do I get a 15% discount on clothing if I use your link? I know when I click on it the site says the discount will not be shown but will appear in the confirmation email. Just curious if that is for anything from the site or just the supplements?

Is the new color pink for the mens? It looks pink in the picture.

I'm a fan of the voler black hammer bibs, I can't wear pink bibs.

I'll be ordering the new bibs soon. I like the old but not as much as my Desotos, which are 3X the price and should be better.

I don't race...but I guess if I didn't have a team kit I would wear them...but Hammer will award you if you place in select events wearing one of their kits.

Just finished my first ride in the Hammer Bergamo bibs. Most awesomest bibs ever; felt like I was riding naked. I actually reached down to feel my butt & quad 2-3 times to make sure I wasn't flashing passing cars. Way mo betta than my $140 Desotos, which were my comfort champ up to now. The chamois isn't the most anatomical looking one I've seen just holding them in my hand but on the bike it was great. Any ride over three hours and I will be in these for sure. I like the Volers too but they will be indoor trainer shorts once I get a few more Bergamos. Maybe I'll use the Performance bibs to wash the car or something. I still hate the red color but I'll never buy the Hammer Volers again...but then I have 3 pair already.

Also, hit 1,634 watts so clearly the shorts have a hidden wattage dial.

I've heard the same; might have to call them to make sure.

The Bergamos have a smoother feel both inside and out. They also have a shorter inseam, 9.5" in size large versus 10.5" for the Voler. I'm built like a fire plug so this is a big plus for me. The thigh compression seam doesn't bite like the Voler. I usually can't wait to get out of bibs when I get home. I actually sat around in them for about an hour then got on the trainer for 70 more minutes, after a few hours outside earlier. I can't really comment on the horizontal size or width of them. I'm a lot to be squeezing into a bib regardless.

But, you didn't order them in a size larger than the Voler bibs, right? I'm going to be ordering at least one pair of these in the near future.

I am 5'8, 250 lbs. Size XL would fit me like bib knickers. No way I'm buying those unless I just cut off the bottom 2". Matter of fact my large Pearli knee warmers fit me like leg warmers.
