Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road bike pump

I bought a foot pump from walmart a couple of days back and it broke upon first use. The foot lever got fractured. The pressure indicator shows a max of 120 psi, but the pump obviously cannot handle this high pressure. Also, my bike has a presta valve, the supplied adaptor is decent, but the pump is not able to force air into the tires at anything above 70 psi.

Could you please suggest good pumps for road tires (presta valve). I am looking for good value for money. Something that works. Don't want to blow money on just a fancy name.

Thanks

Specialized has one that's relatively cheap ($30 or somewhere around there), works as well as any I've had at much higher prices (Joe Blow, Park shop model, etc.), and has a good and easy to read guage.

generally speaking - stay away from anything bike related in walmart.

the joe blow series of pumps have hands down the best head design of all the major ones, they last forever and replacement parts are available. the last pump you will buy.

Joe Blow Sport works well for me. I've also used the Park Tool pump (the home version) without any issues. Your local shop or Performance Bike should have something. Otherwise just order one online, although shipping will probably negate any savings.

The funny part is that WalMart isn't even cheap with their pumps

I think I bought a similar blackburn pump. The head lasted a few months and they don't want to send me a replacement head.

I've got a... oh, let me find it... Serfas FP-200 at the moment. Still works, and I quite like the head. It doesn't need to be shoved too far onto a valve stem, so if you've got a slightly deep-section rim and the stem isn't very long, the head will still probably hold a seal.

My Specialized floor pump has been super reliable. I use it on the road bike, folding bike, motorbikes, and cars.

I've thought about using my pump on my truck, but for some reason can't bring myself to do it.

I have used the Park Tool PFP-3, a WrenchForce pump, and the Topeak Joe Blow Sport. My favorite one is the Joe Blow pump, easy to use and it doesn't leak air like the Park Tool. The WrenchForce pump doesn't come off of the valve easily and usually results in the lose of 10+ psi from the tire. The Park Tool is only 3 years old and the head doesn't seat well on the valve stem very well and leaks air while I pump up the tires. The Park also had an issue with the ball valve at the bottom of the pump, used to keep air coming back into the pump. Well, the ball wouldn't seat so the air from the tire entered the pump chamber and I took the handle to the chest. There was a piece of plastic blogging the ball so that it wouldn't seat correctly.

+1 on the topeak joe blow.

I think I paid about $40 for mine at REI. Its got a solid aluminum base and metal parts in the valve head as well. Seems very built to last.
This pump is so much better than the schwinn branded POS that I was using before that could barely get up to 100psi.

"Big box" and "Bullleye" stores have some bargain items that are adequate for cycling. Unfortunately this floor pump "ain't" on of them. The best floor pump I have ever owned is the Specialized Air Tool floor pump. It has a solid aluminum body for solid pumping (cheaper pumps have flexible plastic bodies). It also has a universal chuck to accept both Schraeder and Presta valves. - no tricky or finicky switching of internal chuck parts required. It has a large, easy to read pressure gauge, mounted in the base rather than on top of the pump. Top heavy pumps can tip over and damage the gauge. Not so if the pump is in the base of the unit.

When it comes to floor pumps, sometimes you get what you pay for. I even use the Specialized Air Tool mini frame pump. As an 8" mini, you do need a few more pumps to achieve the required volume in a road tyre, but it easily provided adequate psi for a roadie.

I've got the bright yellow sport one. I didn't know they had so many different versions, but it appears that the sport is actually one of their lower-end pumps at least pricewise.

Can't imagine what you would be gaining by going up to their more expensive models, the sport has everything you could want in a pump.

Judging the pressure capacity of an air pump by the pressure gauge is a bit like judging the top speed of a car by the speedometer. I agree with everyone here who has recommended Joe Blow... I've got one and it's a dream compared to all the others I've ever owned.

Interesting, I thought all Blackburn pumps were guaranteed for life? Last year I had a head on one of my Blackburn pumps fail and they sent me TWO replacement heads free. I only asked for a single replacement.
