Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

25mm tires on Zipp 808

First, I understand this is not the best answer from an aerodynamic point of view. However these wheels are 808 rims, (520's) laced to tandem hubs, and are going to be used on a tandem. For crits, I want to use 25mm tires (Continental 4000's) for the flat protection, and cornering grip.

However Zipp says to only use 18-23mm tires with the wheels. My first thought was to check Sheldon's website. From that it would appear even the narrowest rims will work with 25mm tires.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html

Unfortunately the interior dimension of the 520 Zipp rim is not readily available. The website lists the "aero rim width" at 24mm, but that does not refer to the interior rim width.

The tires mount on the rims with no issues, and are very tight on the rims.

So HTFU,and go ride them, or listen to Zipp?

Could you use Specialized Roubaix tires that are 23/25 (25 casing with 23 size tread)?

Actually, as our clincher bead is governed by the ISO/ETRTO standard that dictates that a road racing rim be compatible with tires between 18-25 mm, those tires are just fine. The aero penalty is on the order of approximately 6 Watts, though that figure is affected by frame configuration on the rear wheel. Can you let me know where you got the info on tire compatibility and I will rectify the misstatement?

thanks for the info. It's on a sticker by the valve on the rims, to use only 18-23mm tires, and not to exceed 125psi.

I believe these wheels were actually built in 2005 (based on some writing on the rim bed with a sharpie, if that helps.)

I believe zipp says to use 18~23mm for the aero effect. anything larger will increase drag.
I think there was a post 3~4mo. back from zipp rep about the aerodynamics between the recommended tire size and larger, in that 25mm will be something like 33% increase in drag compared to 23mm at 25mph.

now to find that post before someone says 'incorrect'

Since Waldo works for Zipp, I'll take his word for it that it's a 6 watt difference...

"4000's" is the plural of "4000." 4000S is the other model.

yeah, the tires in question are Continental 4000 (with ' small case s being plural)

Now the interesting thing is what makes a 4000 a 4000S is black chili in the tire.

So while there is no 4000S in a 25mm tire, the black 4000 has the black chili and is the functional equivalent of a 4000S.

And +1 on Zipp's customer service/responsiveness.
