NYS Trooper killed cycling

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My heart goes out to his wife and three kids.. Sucks going out for a bike ride to get some exercise and ending up in a body bag.. Dont know if the 20 year old was on his cell or what but cell phones and text messaging scare the hell out of me.

Hate to see anyone killed cycling, but on the other hand, if anyone is killed, it's better if it's the mayor, the police chief, etc.- at least that way, the officials take it seriously instead of saying "He shouldn't have been bicycling!"

I was going to reply to this in much different manner. But after I clicked on the link you provided in your "already posted here" reply and saw that you are the one that posted it there, it became crystal clear. You are upset that nobody has replied to your post. Unreal.

{sigh} I get so angry at this BS! People who can't avoid hitting people or objects on the side of the road should lose their license. PERIOD! If you can't control your vehicle you shouldn't be behind one!! How many people have to die before they take this thing seriously?

Can we keep this focused on the now deceased state trooper, a 19 year veteran who leaves behind a wife an 3 children, and not on petty infighting about who posted what and where?

I rode along on a county road Friday with a 45mph speed limit and no shoulder. Dumb move on my part, but I survived. Wont' do it again though. This poor guy rides along on a route he undoubtedly knows like the back of his hand, with a wide shoulder and he gets killed. Seems unfair.

Wow. That is a little scary. A buddy of mine and I are riding the same road from Albany to Buffalo in august. That puts a little fear into me.....

YEah, I was a mile or two away from this site today, that Rt. 20 he was on is a country type road, hilly too thus a GREAT ride, Has a nice shoulder and little traffice, thus drivers always have plenty of opportuni8ty to give room to bikers. There have been issues here with a "blind" spot because of the hill crests and such. HE knew the road VERY well and was a member of the Onondaga Cycle Club.

He really had an incredible enthusiasm and curiosity about all things cycling. A lot of it was due in part to his son, who he was incredibly proud (as he should have been...he was right in there in a tough field at fitchburg this weekend). It seemed like every time I saw him he told me he got a great shot of me crossing the line, taking a corner, and how i did really well (regardless if i did or not), and he would send the photos to our shop sponsor to put up on their wall. He seemed like a one man fan club and photographer for pretty much the entire local racer community. This was a guy I really didn't know all that well, i can only imagine all the other good qualities I never got to see...

Damn shame.

My prayers go out to him and his family.
