Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wife gave me a weird look when I explained the need for multiple sunglasses…

The only time I ever wear sunglasses is riding. Mine are Wiley X XL-1 ballistic glasses I got from my brother in law when he came back from Iraq. They are great specs and come with 3 types of lenses.

Fifteen year-old, rose-tinted Briko Stinger goggles, Mario Cipollini-style. I wouldn't dare wear those any place other than on a bike. They're great on the bike, though. The huge lenses deflect tons of wind.

I use Rudy Project Sports Mask (I think thats what theyre called) for cycling only. They rock as cycling glasses, they look stupid as everyday glasses.

I have probably 6 different pairs of sunglasses. I have 2 pairs for cycling only. Call it a fetish if you want.

My main pair of cycling glasses are Tifosi Pave.

I wear RX Oakley Flak jackets with transitions lenses. I bought them for cycling but now I wear em all the time, except in my office and lab where I put on my normal nerd frames. People comment on them more than any glasses I have even owned and I've noticed a strange dicotomy...men seem to universally dislike these glasses (or rather they dislike that I'm wearing them off the bike), but women universally seem to think they are cool. There is some interesting sociobiology at work here.

i've got black radars with the black iridium lens so they dont stand out too much. i have my wayfarers for when i'm dressed more casual than the radars would look appropriate for.

i want to get a pair of chrome hearts . . . if you thought oakleys were pricey . . . . .

I have a cheap pair of sunglasses that are cycling only that I keep in the bag that has my gloves, shoes, and helmet in it. The bag just makes it convenient to grab-and-go when I load up the car for a club ride. The bag normally hangs by a hook in the garage next to the bike. One day I'll get better glasses...helmet first though.

That said, what's a good value-conscious pair of cycling glasses?

I just picked up a set of these:

MP3 Sunglasses with Bluetooth

I'm sometimes OnCall for work, so these will let me listen to tunes and ring at me if I get paged through a text message.

I'll inform the group how they work when i get them.

I have a set of glasses that I use only for the car (and almost never leave the car).

And I have a set of glasses with changeable lenses (dark, amber, clear) that I bought and primarily use for riding, but use them occasionally when not riding.

Yep, definitely specific glasses for riding... I keep them in my helmet and do a Mr. Rodgers-esqe sunglasses change for riding like he changes his sweaters. I'd really rather not be seen in them for anything other than riding. Blech.

I have cycling-specific sunglasses. Of course, my leaving the house not on a bike is sufficiently rare, I generally can't locate my non-cycling shades. So I just wind up looking dorky in the biking shades all the time anyway.
