Compact crank for 9sp Ultegra?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Compact crank for 9sp Ultegra?

Thought I'd see what all the fuss was about with compacts. Well, that and I've started doing legit hill climbs and I'm falling into a lower cadence than I'd like. So what's out there that's compatible with my Ultegra 6510 drivetrain?

I think Ritchey makes a 9 sp compact that'll work.

you can just buy a 10s compact crank and use a 10s chain with your 9s cassette. FYI, even after you lower the front derailleur, the 9s Ultegra/DA derailleurs don't seem to shift that great with compacts....just buy a 10s derailleur as well

I run a 10 speed compact with my 8 speed bike. I've never had a problem. The bike does have downtube shifters, so I don't know if that matters for shifting since the front one is friction.

Because the 10spd chains are narrower, I don't think that you want to change your chain. You should be ok to run narrower chainrings with your current set up. Backcountry.com has Ultegra compacts on sale for $99 right now. I would recommend one of those.

Of course I am no expert, I just happened to sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

tiagra compact fits the bill. actually you can use any shimano 10sp compact too.

I've used 9sp FD with a 10sp shimano compact with 9sp chain/cassette, it worked fine.

if you can't get it to shift properly with a 9sp FD, you are doing something wrong.

If you have an octalink BB, then the ritchey crankset will fit just fine.. I have done it with my DA 9 speed setup.. Lower the Front Der a bit, take a few links out of the chain and you good to go..

Bought mine on ebay from Bayareavelo

That Ritchey looks interesting, thanks -- and I guess I'll keep an eye out for compact Shimano kit as well. Good to know there's some minor incompatibility but that it can be dealt with.

I used a standard Ultegra 10-speed compact crank on a 9-speed drivetrain and it worked flawlessly.

- 10spd Ultegra crank
- 9psd 105 brifters
- 9spd XTR rear derailleur
- 105 front derailleur
- SRAM chain

Quite the cobbled-together setup, as you can see.

I run all 9 spd 105 with a rival compact... no shifting problems at all. I do run a 10 spd chain, but plan to try a 9 spd next time around... but only if I can find one for les then the 10's which seems to be getting harder to do...

It May take a little tweaking to get it shifting just right, but onec it's set, it is good to go.

I found an R700 Shimano 10 spd compact crank on ebay and it installed it on my 9 spd Trek 1500. It shifts and operates perfectly. It only cost $ 79 and had been used very little. It's a 50/34. I also had a 12-27 Ultegra (from probikekit) installed and made it up Mt Mitchell with no probs. Shop around and you can save a lot. Good luck.
