Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

WOW it's amazing you remember all that! I was rear ended a few months ago and I don't remember anything about the incident except riding and then being surrounded by paramedics at the scene. My injuries were no where near what you have. Good luck! Get well! Ride soon!

The person that hit you probably had $25,000 in insurance... for coverage of YOUR damages? Hm... I never really understood US automotive insurance policys. Disturbing IMO. Who covers that in excess of the $25,000? Your own insurance?

On my bike and with my Norwegian UCI license I believe I am covered for 3 000 000 NOK in liabilities. That equates to ~470,000 USD.. Nice for when I crash into an expensive artwork. My car insurance is a wholly different story, no limits for personal injuries.

Hello pharding,

Just terrible to hear about your accident. Your posts sound as positive as anyone could be after such terrible injuries. Getting hit from behind is something that I fear the most.

Hope that your recovery goes as smoothly and quickly as possible.

Also hope that you can see your way back to riding.

I had virtually the same experience when I was 17.

I was unconsious before I hit the ground, after flying across two lanes and landing on my head (without a helmet).

Best wishes for your recovery. Heal quickly.

I missed this the first time around. Pharding, I'm so sorry for your accident -- how awful for you!

I hope you're well into healing and physical therapy. I wish you a complete and speedy recovery.

Also keeping good thoughts for your wife. She's going through her own kind of hell.

Update. I am currently recovering at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, Illinois. I will be here until approximately July 24. I have physical therapy for 3 hours every day. I work very hard at this and I also stretch and exercise my injured leg, ankle, and foot on my own. I tried to go out without pain medicine, but that unfortunately did not work. After experiencing substantial pain when seated, they took more x-rays of my pelvic area. I also have a fractured coccyx. It is my tail bone and not Mr. Happy. Apparently when struck by the car at 55 to 50 mph my Fizik Arionne Tri Saddle was driven into my arse with great force. In addition to the fractured coccyx, I have very painful external and internal bruising in this area. When I return to cycling I am going to take my cup from high school football and reorient it to the rear.

After interviewing two law firms, I selected the Clifford Law Group to negotiate a fair settlement with my auto insurance carrier. Apparently I am entitled to compensation for pain and suffering, present and future medical expenses, loss of income, etc. The woman that hit me is likely underinsured and we will have to convince my auto insurance carrier to fulfill their responsibilities under my uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

I can walk with a walker and I take a wheel chair for longer distances. I wear a leg brace and torso brace except when in bed. I don’t whine about pain because I am grateful to be alive. I will likely be able to cycle and swim again. Running may be too painful for my back. I sucked at running anyway so I will just focus on the two sports that I really enjoy.
