Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

thinking of upgrading

I am thinking of upgrading from a Trek 2100 to a bike that is fully carbon. Does anybody have any thoughts on the bike they would recommend. Trek? Specialized? I race some (triathlon), and I do a lot of long rides.

My recomendation would be to keep your Trek as your road bike, and buy a dedicated TT bike for your triathlons.

Which one depends on how much you want to spend. In figuring which TT bike, first budget for a rear disc wheel, and front trispoke or deeep dish carbon rim. Then pick a frame within you budget with what you have left (even if means getting a Leader frame instead of a Cervelo.)

I am upgrading because my bike was destroyed in an accident. If I were younger and if I were doing as many tris as I used to I would buy a tri-specific bike. But I don't do that many any more. I want to do some. Mostly I will be doing longer rides--including a four day one coming up.

Then I would tend to look at comfort/ performance bikes, like Cannodale synapse, Specialized Roubaix, Cervelo RS.

And I know you said full carbon, but if you want a great bike for long days, that still performs well, you can't go wrong with high end titanium, perhaps a Litespeed Archon, a Merlin Extralight, or a custom built Seven.
