You're absolutely correct .... it is July, and it is the middle of winter. Can't wait till September when spring comes.
However, you might check the Winter forum for winter coat ideas. I, too, am looking for a winter coat, but not for cycling. Meanwhile, I'm just wearing my husband's. I suspect if we order one now, winter will be over by the time it gets here.

I like my Mountain Hardware windstopper-tech. With pit zips, you can adjust for temp changes. For rain, everybody raves about Showers Pass Elite 2.0, I have a Marmot Exum (gore-tex pro), which I love. Main advantage of alpine-sports jackets is there are so many out there it's easier to find good ones on sale.
For any jacket, its versatility is increased with appropriate wicking underlayers, notably for sub-freezing conditions and longer (3+ hour) rides. Polypro, Merino, polyester all work. Some things are gimmicky, like my Helly-Hansen hollow polypro inner layer interwoven with merino outerlayer jersey, it's good but nothing fabulous.
And don't forget bibtights. Worth every penny in 30-50 conditions.

In 30-50F weather, I would use a vest instead of a full jacket. Wear the vest over a long sleeve jersey and you should be fine. The vests with a covered back are slightly warmer than vests with a mesh back. Buy whatever brand of vest fits you the best.
A full jacket will be too warm for most people in that temperature range, unless it is raining or snowing or something.

Best jacket I have owned was from a woman who sells old team issue clothing from Ireland.. Look for one with Sinchi fabric, nice lightweight fleece, outside is fairly waterproof.. Just need base layer + jacket for down to 30 degree weather..

30-50F is a big spread. As noted above when it's close to 50 you can do with a long sleeve jersey and a vest. When it gets close to 30, I like a base layer (love the Craft base layers) with a heavy jersey. I was very happy last year with a Pearl Izumi Gavia jersey. It's pretty warm and has a layer to keep the wind out. If you shop around you can find the PI stuff on sale or they have a number of outlet stores around the country.

x2. 40+ a vest is perfect. Below 40 I like something full sleeved, but not too heavy ... it is ez to get too much. Concentrate on keeping your hands and feet warm.

No, of course it doesn't. But evidently you are unaware that the southern hemisphere is in winter right now, and that there are actually cyclists in the southern hemisphere. Go back to school botto!!!!
