How can i learn to ride properly?

Well i know how to ride a bike (i hope) and it's been my only way to get around the last 5 years but i wanna get a road bike and start doing some training as i have nothing to do in the evenings i could start riding as i have about 3 - 4 hours a night. But before i launch into it i want to make sure i'm sitting well and pedalling well and everything. When i ride my bike i'm aware that my feet are tense and my pedalling technique is awful and bouncy at high cadence's so i was wondering if anyone can recommend a book that takes you through all this kinda stuff or anything to do with road cycling technique. I don't want to start riding for hours only to find i'm causing myself injuries by tensing up.

I've had several since 1999 but have settled on my beloved 2001 Litespeed Tuscany and 2011 Felt Z4. :-)

Hook up with a bike shop group ride if there's one in your area. Tell the riders you would like suggestions and pointers so you can become a better rider. Cyclists are usually friendly and helpful.

A man was visiting New York City and wanted to attend a concert at Carnegie Hall. Try as he might, he just couldn't find it. Finally, he saw a man standing on the corner, walked up to him and asked "How can I get to Carnegie Hall.?"

Without missing a beat, the man said "Practice."
"My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

ah, you see i used to play the guitar and thought the answer was practise and i did so for about 8 - 12 hours a day but i was practising with bad posture and stuff and ended up ruining my tendons, i don't want to do the same by cycling the wrong way being too tense or leaning to hard on my hands and ruining them.

the lance armstrong/chris carmichael book is good "lance armstrong performance program"... i've read it and use most of the things they advise... just go to your local bookstore and flip through the books, and buy one so you can constantly reference it.
