Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Identify my mystery tool?

I was going through my jumbled box of hex wrenches and miscellaneous small bike tools and found this item. I can't remember what it's for. Anybody recognize it? I'm pretty sure it's a bike thing but not 100% sure.

In either case, it's at least 15 years old, if that helps. I'm thinking it might unlock some kind of dust cap on a freewheel or something.

What you can't see in the picture is that on the back of the two pin things there's the smallest little trace of a hook or bend, like it's supposed to catch on something. But it's very subtle.

Looks like a golf shoe cleat tool? Spacing looks too close for the dust covers on my old square-taper cranks.

It sure does look a lot like that, doesn't it? I realize now I neglected to give a size scale but it's just a bit smaller than what you're holding in the picture - basically the size of a smallish key head with the gap between the pins being about 4mm (Edit: I found a ruler and measured it at 5.5mm from center of pin to center of pin).

The thing is, though, I've never owned or used a gun so it's not a gun thing. I've never golfed, so it's not a golf thing. And I've never even heard of a trigger lock*, so it's not that, even though it looks plausible.

At least your replies do seem to point to the fact that it's some kind of unlocking key.

* Edit - Oops, now I understand what you meant by trigger lock. When I first read it I thought it was a style of lock but upon reflection you obviously meant the lock for a trigger on a gun. It shows you how much gun experience I have. Although I am thinking about learning to shoot.

Looks like the tool to take off the self extracting bolts on some octalink cranks.

I could use it if you don't need it, if that's what it turns out to be. About 17mm between the prongs?

Wasn't there a TV show like this in the 70's?

They would trot out some object and each person on the panel told a story at to what it was and the contestants had to guess who was telling the truth?

So far I'm going for trigger lock.

That is a Suntour derailleur adjust key, called a “Sunco key”. You got them with the group set in the 80s. It was used to adjust 5 speed rear derailleur shifting. There were two recessed holes in the main body and this key was used to adjust the cage to cog space. Clockwise took you further from the cog, anti-clockwise took you closer to the cog.

On the other hand I could have just made that up.

Bob - I remember that show

I think I've seen a show on PBS that has a segment like this. This Old House or something like that.

Yeah, I can't remember the name of the show exactly but it's got several of the "This Old House" guys that go around and help homeowners do fairly simple repairs. They have/had a segment (I haven't actually seen the show for a year or two but I assume it's still on) where they show some weird tool/implement and each one of them gives their version of what it's used for. Some of the explanations are pretty outlandish and laughable (on purpose). At the end, though, they reveal what the true use for the tool is.

Some crank dustcaps have two holes, and you need something that looks an awful lot like that to unscrew them.

Crank dustcap removal tool, imo.

I thought that too, but the spread on my old 105 crank dustcaps is far wider than the 4mm he said this tool has.

Looks like the little tool used to pull the antenna back up after it was retracted into the fender of my D-90. You own a Land Rover by any chance?

That is a blow dart removal tool. You place the two prongs under the head of the dart and pry it out of your thigh or posterior.
