Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Puncture-resistant tyres?

Hello everybody!

I am considering buying new tyres after having numerous punctures with my Specialized All Condition tyres.
These only happened to my REAR tyre. I've never flattened my front tyre so far (Keep fingers crossed...)

I noticed that pieces of glass, metal and little stones often get stuck in the rear tyre and make their way into it until they reach the tube.
I need to check regularly the tyre to make sure they are not there. I don't weigh too much, around 80 Kg, so I don't have specific weight needs.

However I am considering trying an anti-puncture tyre for the rear wheel.

Specialized All-Condition Armadillo, Continental Ultra GatorSkin, Schwalbe, Michelin or others?

Any advice is more than welcome!!

Thanks a lot!!

Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to your question but the correct spelling is "tires".

Not necessarily. It depends on which time zone you're writing from.

Everybody has their favorite brand. I've been using the gatorskins for several years but I don't know that my personal experience and opinion is any more valid than somebody else's.

It would appear from the posts done on this site, flatting is really area or region specific. By that I mean, those that ride in big thorn and goat head country really have far more problems than many of the rest of us. I ride on pretty darn good condition mountain roads when the plant life rarely causes the flat, it is more glass, and even more so, small nails and construction type staples that do the damage.

I had the Specialized all Condition Pros on my bike and did not like how heavy and slow they felt and I got the occasion flat. After they wore out I switched to 23mm Gatorskins for my commute and I like them a lot. Personal observations, they roll easier, stick better on the fast down hills and have given me less flats over the same roads.

But…….They don’t stop everything, hard to blame my tire for giving up its air when it meets a clever foe like this on one of my rides.

Get the Ultra Gators, they're great. I commute/train/race on them with no problems. I've gotten up to 60mph down a canyon without having any problems with them feeling squirly or anything.

My first set I had one flat in 5k miles. My second set has had no flats in the past 2k miles.

I've been using Gatorskins for the last 25,000 miles. Only 2 flats in that time - one was due to a screw that went all the way through both the tire and the rim.

Switched from the Mondos on my Allez to GatorSkins, and while the ride got harder, I have never had any issues with getting any flats since. (But then again, it's only been a week since I got them, haha)

I do miss the Mondos... the ride was so comfortable...

Agreed. My bike route consists of lots of rocks and broken glass that I run over, no puncture yet.

The majority of BF posts I have seen about Armadillos, though, is the ride comfort... is rather lackign ?

Last time I checked, Specialized made several different Armadillo tires. The heavier ones are dogs, but the lightest ones are reportedly not too bad. I've never tried them myself, though.

Gatorskins. What's nice about them is that the rubber compound isn't so sticky that small shards of glass and small rocks adhere to it. However, it's still good practice to brush any debris off the rear tire when you stop, or when you're at a roll, if you can do it without crashing.

The downside of Gatorskins is that, at least allegedly, they won't grip or ride as well as a supple, sticky, puncture-prone high-performance tire.

*very* true. The Specialized Mondos that my Allez came with were very comfy even on semi-rough roads. With the GatorSkins it is quite bumpy =[... but it is a small price to pay for *never* having to worry about getting leaks/flats!
