Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Under $500 Bike

Well I'm going to USC (a biking campus) this year, and I'm looking to get a new bike. I was looking for a bike with shocks that are air controlled (not springs), disc breaks (not normal tire clamps), and a good build quality. Could anyone suggest me one under $500?

-thanks!

1.) Your priorities are all wrong.

2.) You are not looking for a road bike - this is the road bike forum.

Regardless of where this question should be posted....

Which is the greater priority? Having a bike with that kind of equipment or a bike for that price? If you want that gear, go to a bike shop. If you want it for under $500, check craigslist

I wouldn't get anything too nice. There are a lot of bike thieves in that area and they're the risk taking kind (as if stealing isn't risky). I know some people that live right next to USC and the thieves have broken into their homes just for their bikes :O

You will probably get more useful advice for your situation (and fewer insults) if you ask your question in the commuting forum. Good luck in school.

if i remember correctly, USC is in south central LA....

1. get something cheap on CL for free or under $20
2. use it until it gets stolen
3. ??!??!?
4. make money
5. repeat at step 1

You might as well one up everyone.

Or you could probably go with a Hybrid. Look at Trek FX or Specialized Sirrus series bikes.
