Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

a bike to make a man sweat?

Hey all,

I just sold my old bike and looking for something that is a definite step up. I'm still relatively new to bike worlds (Ive been riding for years), I don't really know anything about brands. I have someone to "impress". An a-hole and want him to notice me just a little so I can be mean to him. I have my own reasons. (dont question my f-up'ed intentions) But most of all I do just want something that it nice, I depend on my bike a lot.

Any suggestions on some semi drool inducing bikes (I dont have enough money for full drool) $500 is my limit as of now.

I was thinking something vintage (but not necessary) definitely something more upright, I bike in the city and have a few back problems. single speed. something that wont look stupid with a basket.

Also do you recommend building your own bike (I wont build it but I know someone who offered) Do you get more bang for your buck that way?

Thanks guys.

Try to find a used Cannondale CAAD5/6/7/8 on ebay. Not much drool to be had for $500...

Better yet, buy 500 lottery tickets. Then when you win, buy this:

I saw this one on craigslist for about that not too long ago. I hear it's one of a kind and Louis Armstrong owned it, so I think that means it's old :

just because the owner may have a propensity to drooling doesn't necessarily mean the bike is drool inducing.

Well, what do you expect genius? Asking what $500 bike is going to make your whatever-the-hell-he-is "semi-drool" in here....some people here spend that and over that on a pair of bibs, a jersey, and sunglasses. $500 is barely above a "better" Wal-Mart bike.

If you had asked about $2000 you might have gotten some more serious answers to "semi-drool on a budget".

I dont give a damn how much people in here spend. I'm not rich at all, I barely get by and I was lucky enough to save up $500. So I'm not entitled to have a nice bike? Thats why I came here to get some help from people who might know something and help me find a somewhat attractive/road worthy bike for a ****ty budget. screw you.

Awth,

It's more fun to ride a lesser bike and kick ass. $500 would buy a decent used Criagslist ride. Just ride and have fun. This is supposed to be fun. Including my post above that was nothing more that forum humor or lack of humor.

Riding faster than your buds will do more than a drool bike.

Relax... this is a forum...

Whoah there you need to slow your roll a bit. Insulting will get you nowhere productive. The response about the used Cannondale was/is good advice. The lottery jokes were just that....jokes.

No one is making fun of your budget and you can find a nice used bike in your budget that is probably capable of more performance than your legs are.

(No insult is meant by that)

The fact is though that $500 wil not get the drool going, unless you find the right bike from prior to say 1985 or so. Then the Classic and Vintage will give you enough drool to fill one of those 5 gallon water jars they have at the grocery store.

Anyways, getting uptight ain't gonna help you at all. Just roll with it.

Take your question and the $500 over to C&V. You'll get a more reasonable and practical response.

For $500, you can get a pretty nifty looking antique tank bicycle from the 50's. Whether that induces drool is highly dependent on the droolee, and wouldn't accomplish much on THIS forum. Most of the new bikes you buy for $500 won't be a lot different than what everyone else is riding around White Rock Lake, thus not much drool factor involved.
