Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

anyone have a suggestion on what new bike shorts I should buy for under $100? I was thinking either castelli's or Hincapie's.

Bibs for sure, I have tried more expensive ones, but I really like my Performance Ultra II's. Great fit for me, and great muscle support.

Giordana Silverline shorts are some of the most comfortable shorts I have personally used. Nike is not half bad either. Avoid Pearl Izumi if you want to be comfortable, the pads arent too good. Also check out Hammer Nutrition's bibs, the pad in the Bergamo's are supposed to be nice.

I have the Hincapie Sportswear HC-12 shorts. They're pretty amazing, especially considering the price you can find them for online. Hint: check ebay.

A lot of us order from UK Vendors. If you're in the US, it's rare that you get charged duty (unless it's a very large order). Pricing from some of the UK Vendors is very low (since it's for export the VAT and probably duties are removed).

ProBikeKit
ChainReaction
Wiggle
RibbleCycles

All UK outfits that are pretty popular. Just make sure you use a virtual credit card number as some have had issues with the credit card processors/fraud. It's not limited to the UK though, Nashbar had the same issues

Don't buy shorts, buy bibs.

I buy high end bibs, so I have no experience with them, but many on these boards like the Hammer Nutrition Voler bibs and recommend them frequently.

I am very pleased with performance ultras...and if you shop carefully you can get them (shorts or bibs) for about 50 bucks on sale. I have tried the $250 Assos bibs and don't really notice much of a difference in comfort....the more expensive ones are probably more durable, but not worth the extra money IMO.

You're entitled to your opinion, but please don't suggest that the average person can't tell the difference between a $50 and $250 bib. That's just ridiculous.

Well I may not be average, and clearly the $250 bibs are of higher quality material and will likely have a much longer lifetime....but in terms of comfort on the bike, I did not see any significant difference.

I think you should go do a century in cheap shorts that you've been wearing for 2 yrs.
Then you can let us all in the comfort angle.

Just step up for once and buy the damn assos.

I've done double centuries in 100 plus degree heat wearing Performance Elites. Have you actually tried them? They are pretty amazing. The fabric has just the right give. It becomes a second skin and doesn't slide about at all.

Yes, the Performance logo means you get zero style points. But I'll bet if they had a different logo and cost twice as much everyone would rave about them. I find them much better than Voler (which I think of as 50 bibs) and like them more than my Castilli and Hincappie bibs.

thanks for all the input. I have been wearing performance elite shorts for 3 years. They seem to have worn out. All of a sudden they got real uncomfortable -- after 30 miles I can't hardly sit anymore. Time for some new ones I guess. thanks again
