Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Dura-Ace PD-7810 vs. Speedplay

Been using Speedplay for past three years. Trying Dura-Ace PD-7810 pedals which are a bit challenging to unclip. My X-Series Speedplays I utilize Teflon based lubricant "DUPONT - Teflon Multi-Use Dry Wax Lubricant" on my cleats. Much easier to unclip than my new DURA-ACE PD-7810. Of course my old pedals will be easier since they are worn a bit but new pedals are fairly challenging to unclip. Looked @ SHIMANO instructions which state use SHIMANO lubricant. Called tech support twice one said to adjust tension(lubricant is grease used on spindle) & other said to try a lubricant.

Can anyone with some experience recommend a course of action. Do not want this to evolve into another SPEEDPLAY bashing thread.

did you loosen the tiny little hex bolt that controls release tension? IMO you can keep it near the loose end of the scale, even for racing.

I used those same Shimano pedals Dura-Ace PD-7810 for about a month and had a hard time getting in and out of them. I sold them on Ebay and bought Speedplay. Never had any problem getting in or out of Speedplay pedals so now I will never use any other pedal.

Well I probably will stay with SPEEDPLAY. Was just wondering if anyone lubes the seating area on SHIMANO PD-7810 pedals. See the adjustment option.

I doubt that lubricant will do much. The clip-out tension's determined by the spring, not by friction. They're racing pedals, they're designed to be very, very unlikely to unclip accidentally.

And I wouldn't be using any lube on the top surfaces, anyway. They're already slippery enough if you miss clipping in.

I have them on all my bikes. I've never lubed them externally.

I keep them at medium tension on the road and TT bikes and max tension on the track bike. Can click out when I need to even on the track bike.

My wife has them too and I keep hers on low. She is spastic and can still get out easily. If you can't get your foot out, must be a personal problem.

The tension adjustment screw on the 7800/7810 pedals can be taken up to 3 full turns past the indicated minimum point without compromising any feature or risking pedal failure. I recommend starting at 2 turns under minimum and see how you like them. Take it to 3 if it is still too stiff for you. I run mine at 2 and they work perfectly. I like'm much better than Speedplays.

With new cleats the pedals are also a little more firm to engage and release. As the cleats wear they will get easier to release and clip in.

Thanks for all the input. Seems very apparent I need to adjust the set screw. Will try the PD-7810 Pedals for awhile to get a feel for them.

dura-ace road pedals are the best pedals ever made.

I wish I could afford a set, instead I bought new wheels =)

If you decide to get rid of them, please PM me !!!

Hi,

I don't get it. Dura Ace peddles are easy to un-clip. I have never had a problem. My sweetie likes her speedplays and I like the Dura Ace. Someone else mentioned this but adjust the tension with the hex wrench. Not to bash speedplay but I am tired of working on my sweeties bike, or handling it because you always get grease on your hand from the peddles. And..... getting in a large group ride the persons with grease on their legs seem to always have speedplay peddles. What's up with that?
regards, curtwally

I have been riding Speedplay pedals for years and have never experienced what you are saying. I wipe off the excess grease with a rag and I never have grease on my hands or legs from my pedals.

I don't 'lube the seating area' and neither is it mentioned in the instructions. The spring tension for binding is adjusted to the lowest setting and it is more than enough for me (they are still very new).

Interestingly, the red cleats claim 0 degrees of play but in reality there is just enough to allay fears of being completely fixed in one position.
