Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

3T ARX Stem - False Weight Claims :)

I'm not a weight weenie, but check out the weight of components just for fun while shopping. If two items are about the same price and quality, i'd probably pick the lighter one.

I recently picked up a 3T ARX Pro Stem, the plain vanilla model, no titanium bolts, no CF, just a plain stem. Weight claim on 3Ts site, 150g, actual weight 140g

I was pleasantly surprised, usually the actual weight is slightly higher, but not this time. Kudos to 3T for not exagerating on the weight, and actually providing specs that are on the conservative side

Exactly if they advertise weight on a 110 and you order a 90 there will be a difference.

Nope on the 110 Made me even more surprised. That's why I actually bothered putting it on the scale so I could compare it to the advertised weight.

The only reason I could think why they'd overstate the weight is to make the lighter more expensive versions more attractive?

what's their sizing range for that line 90mm-140mm? 1 reason could be they took the weight of the middle size of that line maybe the 120mm?

another reason coudl be quality control variation. their specification from their provider is maybe 135-155g for every stem and they just err on the side of caution by reporting their stems weight at 150g

Just out of curiosity, is your scale calibrated?

My next upgrade will likely be bars / stem and I had picked out the 3T Ergosum and ARX Pro as one of my main choices. This might be enough to tip me over the edge.

I got the Ergosum bar and stem combo for $90 at PBK a few months ago. Problem is that they never keep them in stock for very long.

3Ts site states 150g for the 110. Not sure if my scale is calibrated, it's digital, and I zero it out before starting. It's main purpose is as a kitchen scale, but every now and then I throw some bike parts on for fun.

I couldn't care much about 10g either way. Just thought it was cool/interesting that 3T erred on the side of caution

Yes, it was from PBK, grabbed stem + bars quickly when they had them in stock.

They just carry that weight so you won't have to find something else to judge them on.

puh leeze...it's the weight weenies that judge other people for our ridiculous things like aluminum bars and stems...

could care less what someone weighs..i just think it's funny that most of the guys that turn their noses up about heavier things on the bike are often well over fighting weight themselves, where they could easily lose 5 pounds and save themselves thousands of dollars.

the weight weenie thing has become way too much of a status thing.
