Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Quick fit question

I have aquick fit/position question. I just bought a new pair of specialized road shoes. I have been wearing an old set of diadoras for years. If all else were to stay the same, tell me what I need to do if the cleats on my new shoes are about 1/8" further back on the shoe than my old ones. They are as far forward as they will go and are still 1/8 " further back towards my heel. What does this do to pedal stroke and the effect on saddle height? I am thinking it is in essence shortening my effective leg length. I don't feel quite the same on the bike and would like some input for a solution to cancel out the cleat being further back. Is this something that I will just get used to by putting some miles in on a new pair of shoes? I don't have any pain, it just does not feel exactly the same.

Hi,

Did you have cleats on your old shoes fitted by a reliable fitter? I understand that you were using them for years with no problems but it sounds to me like they were not in an optimal position. If your old cleats are really that far forward, it sounds like you were pedaling on your toes.

I'd get a professional fitting but you may want be careful about moving the cleats a lot all at once.

Good luck with it.
