Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After much looking ...I bought my first Road Bike

I have been reading here for a while and have picked up some great info over the past few months. I finally decided on my first Road Bike. I was looking for something that was going to start me off with a decent bike, not spending a lot of money, and getting decent components. I think I made a good choice .......I rode today for about 14 miles with the wife....she got a new bike too....she won't be using hers as much as I will....probably for tri's....

My Trek 2.1 Alpha

Her bike..........Trek 1.5 WSD

Just looking at the seatposts, both frames look a size too big, but hey--if they're working for you that's what matters. I'm guessing both of you got fitted by the same person?

Nice looking bikes, though. Trek is becoming one of the more tasteful paint/decal jobs out there...

Now:
Get rid of those silly reflectors. (Two on wheels, one on bars, one on seatpost).

Consider flipping stem as well.

congrats!... now i did the same thing as you and got harassed about posting my new trek 2.1 bike before it was.. umm cyclist approved. Here is the list..

1. Remove orange saftey sticker on fork
2. Remove "Dork Disc"
3. Remove Reflectors and get a flashy light (planet bike superflash)
4. get some clipless pedals
5. "Flip it"
6. Picture was taken with bike in the wrong gear
7. must take pictures in front of a garage door

You don't necessarily *need* to flip it, of course, if you don't feel comfortable.

Ack, My little carbon safety sticker is still on my bike, along with reflectors, I don't have a garage, and I have no idea what the "dork disc" is, so its undoubtedly still on my bike, looking dorky. It's undoubtedly in the "wrong" gear, too. Now I'm nervous...

edit: I just searched dork disc, and I think I'm gonna keep it. Too much junk just to do that.

I don't know either, but I'd guess it's the little plastic/metal disk between your cassette and hub on the rear tire. Is that right guys?

Thanks,
David

The "Flip It" is for younger riders since I am 64 there is no flip in my near future. Do not be scared to move the seat up and down and back or foward to find your sweet ride spot (very small moves). Hope youall wear them out. Enjoy.

To get that plastic protective disk off you will have to remove the casette. Be sure to use the correct tool if you do it.

ding ding ding.. we have a winner

get a needle nose pliers, twist off the 3 little tabs, then just cut it and viola! If it takes more than 2 minutes you're doing it wrong.

its wayy to much work to remove a cassette just to do that.
