Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Passed / Dropped a guy on a Cervelo in full Cevelo Test Team Gear on my MTB

So all is well, packed the TP this time, and was off on my MTB for some road riding on a way to a trail when I came across a guy with a Cervelo. The guy apparently had gotten a flat, and had been waiting on the sidelines for some aid. He did not have a pump. I kind of thought to myself...wait...you have a $4000 bike but you can't afford a pump? Guy was cool though and he really liked my mini carbon pump. Said he forgot to bring his CO2 pump or whatever. I complimented on his bike and he begain telling me about how he always dreamed of owning a cervelo and how great it was being on his dream bike.

I then proceeded to beat him with my MTB....- kidding

He gave me my pump back, started snacking on a sandwich, and I left / dropped him. 30 minutes later he zoom passes me, probably around 28-30mph on false flats. I shouted "Nice" and he turns around and gives me the thumbs up. Moral of the story: Cervelos are fast, and worth the 4k price tag. If this was a race, I wouldn't of let him use my pump, so keep that in mind.

P.S. you can't ride cervelos on mtb trails

Regards,

- Denis

Moral of the story: you can add +10mph to your speed if you spend more.

So wait, I'm getting my first road bike (Cervelo S1) so that means I am automatically fast?! Awesome! I'm gonna totally bomb hills at like 60 mph and climb hills as if other cyclists are standing still, but I can't afford the pump so if I get a flat im screwed too

I think if he's sitting on the side of the road eating a sandwich, "left" might be the appropriate term...

I've discovered that many of the Dutch MTB trails don't require fat tires, suspension, or low gearing.
This makes me .

Last charity ride I went on, at about the 62 mile rest stop, there was a Cervelo leaning against the fence when I left the rest stop. So it does happen.

Good story. I expected another mtb versus roadie/cervelo/fred in full kit bashing post.

Got a smile from it.

I stopped on my normal ride to assist a Cervelo rider and asked him if I could help he stated " I doubt it. This is a high end race bike" " It seems the front shifter thing is out of adjustment but I don't know which of the screws to turn and the chain keeps falling off". " Oh, you don't even have Ultegra on your bike"

Hmm, how many slaps am I going to endure? Ok, my Tricross is a Rival equipped but I am a pretty good wrench. I say, "Yeah, I probably couldn't help. Oh well, have a great ride!" Later!!

I stopped to help a fellow with a new Cannondale road bike a while back... he too had failed to invest in a pump, a spare tube, and tools.

We rode back into the city together and I discovered Cannondales are not as fast as Cervelos... or my vintage Bianchi.

I sometimes ride right by people with flats who have obviously neglected to bring tube, patch kit, or pump. If they can't be bothered, why should I?

I guess I'm just a mediocre Samaritan.

So saying dropped in this context might be humorous.

I don't mind being the god summeritan to help a guy out. The guy wasn't a snob, or perhaps he just wasn't a snob because he needed help.
