Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I fell off my bike tonight....

About 20 min. ago, I fell off my bike yet again. It actually felt good, I left without a scrape or a bruise or even a single hurting feeling. I was more worried about my road bike then myself. I don't know what caused my fall, I was going about 10 mph, and I put my head up for a second, I also think I had 1 hand on my handle bar while using the other hand to adjust my helmet, that when I went down, But its not like I was wobling, I was going straight, maybe I hit a medium size rock and did'nt notice it. I went down front first scrapped my back, got up and aligned my chain and road off for another mile and came home, I was determined to get my set routine done tonight, about 4 miles. The only thing that got bent was the brake handle area, which is tightened to the handle bar, Its a tad loose, so im going to fix that soon, nothing got seriously bent thou. Anyone else fall of their bike today?

On another note, WEAR YOUR HELMET, even Lance Armstrong said it, your always going to fall.

I dont know why, but falling at high speed gives me adrenaline rushes, I've ridden bikes for about 5 years off and on. And I have fallen many times, each time it felt good. Sometimes I came away with road rashes, bleeding knee's bleeding palms, busted lips. But it always ends up feeling good, I dont come away with pain. I come away with experiance, I dont know why, but biking is alot like life, you have to pick yourself up and keep on riding. I know it sounds corny, but its what I feel.

High speed? I thought you said you were going 10mph. Keep your story straight.

To me 10mph is pretty high speed. Its faster than 5 mph. Its fast enough to do some damage to yourself.

I fell today. First time on aero bars. Tip: Do not stand up when using aero bars.

Oh yeah, you were flying.

On another note, I fell off my MTB twice today, both around 12 mph, on tight singletrack, and I'm not very fast.

I feel ya bro, good to see others fall today. Tomorrow is another day, hopefully I dont fall. But if it happens, it happens and I learn from my mistake, but I feel like the fall I had today was a fluke, I shouldn't have fallen.

Wouldn't standing up when using aero bars defeat the purpose of using the aero bars.

last night when I was shifting the front derailleur the chain fell off. I decided to unclip my feet and coast over to the shoulder. I have clipless pedals with a flat side, so I was standing on the flat side and all of a sudden both my feet slipped off. Must of been going atleast 25 km/h. I supported most of my weight on the handlebars, but running with pedals in the way is freakin impossble! there was a guy walking towards me and he saw everything, once I got stopped I pointed at him and said,"did you get that on camera??".. He was talking on his phone and was like,"someone just blew their chain and nearly bailed out!".

Actually, it can be done once you get some practice in. I stand up while tucked down on my aero-bars to stretch out my legs if I'm down for and extended period of time.

Thanks,
David

Are you sure you didn't pass out first and then fall? This happened to me once and when I woke up, in a public park, my bike and all my clothes were gone except for my cycling shoes...true story.

Falls happen to virtually everyone, however it is not normal to be falling all the time, particularly to fall over and over when you're not riding much.

Do you have balance problems in general? I seriously would consider a medical checkup.

Also, practice should help you to fall less. Buying a set of rollers, learning how to use them, and practicing with them will help your bike handling a lot.

And just riding more should reduce your rate of falls. There was a study done a few years ago that showed the rate of falls per mile ridden dropped dramatically as riders got over 1000 miles a year.

I would work on becoming a better bike handler, and not just accept falling all the time as part of the sport. One of these times, your fall is not going to feel so good.
