Bicycling mag. Dogma review
I was wondering if anyone else thinks 18000.00 is a bit crazy to pay for a bike? I have a friend who works in a LBS and he got a Trek 6,2 at cost price around 3000.00 it lists at 6000.00 so what's the profit on a 18000.00$ bike, man what a rip off. At least the Trek is USA made the stuff from Asia must have even higher profits. You cannot tell me that in a blind test ride the Dogma would be any different than the FP3.[yes I know you cannot ride blind I mean unmarked like they do with wine]

to some people $500 for a bike is a lot of money, to others $20,000 is nothing. If someone wants the new Dogma and can afford it, good for them.

I road a Prince, EMX3 and FP3 back to back and would rank them in that order. I could easily feel the difference between all three bikes. The Prince was so much more responsive, stiffer, and simply more fun to ride than the FP3.

But to answer you question I will regurgitate what a noble BF poster once said. The 18k is more than likely a reflection of R&D and yeah its crazy steep for anyone who doesn't pull in an ungodly salary. Just be thankful that there are those who will foot the bill for those kinds of bikes because it continues the manufacturing and research of cutting edge components. Eventually those components become a lot cheaper to make and the tech trickles down to the bikes the us normal folks buy.
- or so thats what I gathered from lurking around these forums
But imo, the performance difference between a trek and a prince is not a significant issue (although I have heard the prince rides like a dream). When (err if) I pass someone I want them to think "jeeze, he's good," not "jeeze, he's rich."
That being said, I hope my next bike to be a Cervelo

I suspect those Lightweight wheels make up a good part of that price tag. And only fools pay full retail. I'm sure that bike can be had much cheaper. I'm surprised it weighed over 15 lbs. For that price, you'd think it'd be closer to 12.

Read the review - they used 60HM1K CF with "nanoalloy" material that absorbs impacts, and has asymetrical chainstays, seatstays and top tube. Someone has to pay for that cutting edge technology. That said, it's still more that twice as much as the Paris.

the point is you knew what you were riding so your opinion is not objective.

Gotta love bicycling mag. I wonder why I bother reading it...besides the above mentioned bike they reviewed a bunch of wheels that all cost in excess of 2K, plus the amazing ASSOS $300 jersey.
sigh.
sigh.

Lost
i've mentioned this before and i will again. 18,000 is not that much money, about the same price as a toyota carolla.
i know plenty of people who have more expensive hobbies, think classic cars, drag racing, motorcycles, etc.
those people spend tons of cash on things they are passionate about.
whats the difference between the guy who has a classic vette in his garage or a dogma...
i'll tell you what - the vette cost more and the guy with the dogma is probably in better shape...

I'm a believer that bike prices are a tad bit out of hand, but the Dogma may be the most desirable bike on the market right now. There's not another bike that has the same swagger as the Dogma. The only other bike that comes close is the Prince. Its like having a Ferrari, its that stigma of ownership dude. I'm trying to think of another bike company with a comparable market image. I must say Cervelo has a little swagger.

That's 18K with Di2 so about 10k with any other gruppo....in the ballpark with full retail high end frames from other manufacturers.

I have a better idea as we march toward socialism. The US government should buy up the remains of bankrupt Chinese bike maker Flying Pigeon. Setup the manufacturing in the US(jobs, jobs, jobs) and then Congress can mandate that FP is the only bike allowed to be sold in the USA!
This would end all these posts on high priced bikes and really prove who has the goods on a steep climb whist you haul a 30+ pound bike up the grade.

As has been pointed out that bike has incredibly expensive wheels and the cutting edge (and incredibly expensive) DuraAce electronic gruppo,
Put on just really expensive wheels and the Campy SR 11 group (which is what it should have anyways) and the bike is still a top 1 or 2% in regards to MSRP but well under 18K.
Way out of my league but if there wasn't a market it wouldn't be there.

Hey Oilman,
Let's not redirect this to P&R please. The thread is about an Italian bike with Japanese components (and wherever Lightweight wheels are made, pardon my ignorance). It's not about economic systems or bankrupt Chinese companies.
OK?
