Garmin 310XT + Quarq Cinqo First ride
I posted this over on the Wattage group and thought I'd repost it here.
I finally got my Garmin 310XT. Seemed like everytime it was in stock at QBP, it would sell out in a day, the day my shop didn't put in an order. I lucked out this time and was able to get one before it sold out.
Pretty standard deal. If you've seen a Forerunner 205 or 305, its just like that but a little smaller. The screen can show up to 4 elements and up to 4 pages. You can also get it to scroll through the pages.
I am pairing this up with a Quarq Cinqo Saturn, purchased in May. I paired it up with my 705 as well so I can compare the data. In the parking lot rolling around to just test it, I notice that the 310XT intermittently picked up cadence and power off my Cinqo. I couldn't figure out why so I kept re-pairing the unit but still got the same result. Then I tried turning the unit around so the head was on the inside of my wrist. Bingo! It picked up flawlessly. I guess the ANT+ signal can't go through my arm. Its a bit of a pain since with the unit on the inside of my wrist, it hits my bars. So I strapped it higher up on my arm but still eventually slides back down once you get sweaty. The band is not large enough to strap to your ankle, not that you really want a $400 unit on your leg exposed to all the road debris.
Now the real test is to see how the data compares. I've uploaded the two data files and links are posted below. I am using 2.7 on the 705 and version 2.5 on the 310XT. As you can see on the 310XT file, the speed drops every 8 seconds. The power on the 310XT is a bit lower but there may have been some data drops due to the position of my arm. Its about 3% lower.
My original intention on getting this device is for a data logger for Cyclocross. I wanted a unit on my body so I can gather data regardless of which bike I may be on.
Would I recommend this unit over the 705? At this point no. The main issue is the ANT+ reception with the Cinqo. I assume you can just strap it to your handlebars and I will give that a try tomorrow at my race. Garmin should have integrated an ANT+ antenna into one of the straps, maybe for the 315XT
