Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

At what point should I start looking?

Past few weeks I've been looking hard for a bike. Looked at the LBS in my area as well as online dealers. And Craigslist/ebay, but I've come to the conclusion that I would be better off with a new bike (I just like things new and shiny). Right now I've got $400 to spend, the rest of my money goes to food, rent and some other stuff.

I've been bit by the bug pretty hard and I the wanting is mighty strong, but I want to save up for something really worthwhile. And I was wondering how much a complete bike would cost me if I wanted something really nice. As of now I'm taking the bus to and from campus for 10 miles. Now because it's public transport and the route is on a busy road there are a lot of stops and a lot of people on the bus. I'm thinking a bike would be great.

I'm sure there is no magic number where the line between meh and good is set. But as a rough estimate....

Thanks,

if you're looking for a road bike, see if you can up the budget to about $600-800, as that's where you'll see some closeout sales on entry-level road bikes. or you could get a brand new fixed gear from BD for under $400.

Okay I'll try and get there. I've ridden quite a lot on some borrowed fixed gears. And I have to be honest, I just don't like the feel of it. Especially going down hill. Maybe I just haven't given it enough time, but it just doesn't seem like it would fit me. If that makes sense.

Parts-wise what would I be looking for a well priced bike at that range?

Are you looking for a Road bike, Hybrid, or Cruiser? Give us a bit more info to help you

In the $400 price range, your best bet is to check out the some of on-line sponsors listed above.

A road bike, but the question wasn't about what I could get for 400. It was about the price range I should start looking for a nice new road bike. The previous poster said 6-8 hundred so I'm shooting for about that range.

It'll probably be my only bike for a while most likely my uses will be for commuting and joy rides. I'd like it to look nice too call it vanity. But I like to cruise in style

ideally you want to have about a grand to spend (assuming you want a new bike from a LBS). however, i've seen some decent closeout models at various shops around $6-800 (though it may be hard to find a particular size, color, etc). personally i wouldn't get a brand new road bike to commute with, but i understand if you want to get a do-it-all bike.

If you're on a budget, I say tou stick with craigslist. Where do you live? Some people here are very helpful and can help you find something good. If you're set on new, little can beat bikesdirect.com (dodges)
