Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What a difference a couple months can make

Back in June, I caught a couple guys on my commute home who were trying to get into shape. One had just bought his first bike a month before, and the other used to ride years ago. We met on the road about three times that month, each time I'd catch them from behind and tow them in all the way home.

Last night, I spotted a couple cyclists way back trying to catch me. Normally I don't sweat my speed, but I sometimes crank things up a notch when people to drop me. I increased my pace to 23mph and was surprised to see them still closing in fast -- I was headed out of town, so I knew they still must have a significant distance to go.

I figured these guys were out of my league, but once they caught my wheel, they didn't pass. Turns out it was those same two guys I'd met back in June. We chatted while we maintained a brisk pace. Even with a little side wind, we averaged over 20mph including lights and stop signs. It was a fabulous, and I hope we ride together again.

However, at the rate they're improving (especially the newbie), I'll need to draft to stay with them.

haha sounds like my story. In late may i started training for the first time ever, was averaging 16mph and dying...

Now just a few short months later i am hitting 19.5-20.5 avg on this same loop solo.

This to me is the best part of cycling, when you are improving on nearly every ride you go on. Although, now every 0.5mph avg improvement takes alot more work.

Looks like you'll have your work cut out for you!
