What do you do during the winter months?
This question is really for people who deal with snowfall December through March... I'm wondering what I should do? I was thinking I could take out my moutain bike and ride around on that and it'll keep me SOMEWHAT in shape... and of course there is always the stationary bike... but how fit can that keep me? What do you guys do?

Studded tires on the mountainbike for commuting, studded tires on the cx bike when conditions allow for more serious training on the road - ie if it's not so sloppy that I worry about motorists sliding into me. The rest of the time - indoor trainer.

Nordic skiing, MTB-ing. All the added resistance from the snow, frozen lubricant, and denser air will really toughen you up!

Bike rollers - basic or all the way with e-motion.

It's the middle of winter right now, and the ski season is in full swing on the local mountains. In fact, it's Christmas Week on Mt Buller: https://www.mtbuller.com.au/winter/ Down here in the valley, winter is rainy and cool.
If I were up and about, I might see about getting up into the mountains to do some cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. I did quite a bit of that when I lived in Winnipeg.
I'd also like to do things like weightlifting, walking ... and of course, cycling in most weather.

I dress for the conditions and keep on riding. If that isn't possible due to road conditions, I use the trainer, ski and do some nordic walking or put on the snowshoes.

What, are you the Ant, preparing for winter? This is summertime - ride your bike now and ask that question in about two months. Oh, wait, you're in Maine. My condolences.

Started XC skating ten years ago. With a Silva headlamp you can have great workouts after work even though there is no daylight. Also have two bikes with studded tires, one with narrows for commuting and plowed roads and an Mtb with wider tires for the rougher days. Indoor training doesn't cut it for me, I'm bored too easiliy.

it's really tough to manage a solid effort in the winter without overdoing it and catching a chill. outside of the commute, I lift weights to address the 6 months of atrophy in my upper body.

Cross country ski. I will also ride as long as the road is clear. Treadmill. Trainer.
I sorta like the break from riding.

Its August and youre worried about winter?
And for what its worth 99.9% of the members of BF dont live in Maine and have no idea how lousy your weather is there so their 2 cents isnt even worth that.. From what I hear the smart Maine residents take off for parts south, the rest should stock up on a cold weather whisky like scotch and have at it.

To the OP, I'd definitely suggest running or the indoor trainer, both of which are a lot cheaper than skiing. Or even better, join a gym/YMCA with a pool. Nothing like an hour or so of laps to keep you in shape.
Mainers are crazy enough to have quite a few 5K or 10K races in the dead of winter too.
