Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another WCSX "personality" supports the anti-cyclist rant that stopped just short of advocating violence to cyclists and... more importantly... what you can do to file complaint with FCC.

The Facebook page post is just ignorant, but I did listen to the radio clip. Some of what they say is true. I am constantly seeing road bikes running red lights/stop signs. (In fact I almost hit a Cervelo that ran a red this morning)

Well, unfortunately they start out making some good points (I yell at my wife to stop at stop signs when we ride together) but then they go overboard and show their ignorance.

If they took the time to learn what makes bike shorts bike shorts, they'd know we're not wearing them to "show off" what good shape we're in for example. Mainly because I'm not... yet.

Thanks,
David

Exactly! Drivers who complain about cyclists not obeying the laws are hypocrites.

Simple facts:

There are idiot cyclists (who blow through red lights, ride 3 abreast, intentionally disrupt traffic, etc.).

There are idiot drivers (who roll though every traffic control device they see and try to drive while eating a Wendy's burger, smoking, and talking on their cellphone all at the same time...yes, I saw this this week, burger in one hand, cig and phone in the other).

Don't be either. If you're one or both, well, you're an idiot...hopefully Darwin rings true before you reproduce.

All true but such reasoning come too close to equating the two, which condemns the behavior of both equally. However, bad cyclists kill themselves; bad drivers kill others.

Attitudes like that contribute to the morbid obesity problem in states like Michigan, Texas, etc.

Hey Mike. What do you expect from WCSX?

The only thing I'd add is that the title of your thread is a bit misleading. These folks aren't Detroiters; they're typical suburbanites. WCSX is in Ferndale and none of their jocks live in Detroit. I ride in Detroit every week, and I never (and I mean NEVER) get any crap from locals. But, whoa boy, get out into Macomb County or Taylor or Ecorse, and every redneck, cigarette smoking, pick-up driving, Deliverance extra tries to run you off the road or, at the very least, unleashes a torrent of profanity over the head of their 4 year old who's sitting in the passenger seat.

Say nice things about riding in Detroit. The only jerks you'll likely encounter are the suburbanites who happen to be driving through.
