Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Second Century Today

Last Saturday I did my first century riding my old Trek 7200 hybrid and a pair of cotton shorts. "Big mistake." My butt was sore for three days after that. Sunday I went and picked up a pair of Pearl Izumi shorts. Knowing that Monday I was to be fitted for a new roadbike. Just the thought of that skinny little seat of a road bike scared my already sore butt into Lycra. Tuesday I picked up my Trek 5000. Went for three rides this week for a total of 140 miles.Between the shorts and the ride qualities of the 5000, my butt didn't feel too bad.

This morning I set out for my usual 40 to 60 mile saturday ride. Turned into 103 miles. I was pleased at the way things were going after 60 mile,so I figured go for it. It wasn't a record breaking run just a slow steady pace. I was experiencing a little pain in my right knee when I was bucking the headwinds. The only other thing bothered me was during the last 9 miles I developed a little stiffeness in my neck. Other than those two minor issues I was real happy with the bikes overall performance and that I stayed intact for for the distance.

Tommorow morning I think I'm going to sleep in and let the little twinges heal. Catch up on a few things around the house. After dinner then maybe take it for a little spin again.

Way to go guy! Your pains will get better as muscles increase in some areas, including the butt! Yeah the only thing bad about solo rides is that there is no one to draft, it's like your always doing the pull. Your relationship with that bike is still new, you will find with time that the bike you have can really be pushed hard and it will do whatever you tell it to. I have a 5200, same frame as yours; it's not my only road bike, but she's sure is my favorite! have fun P.S. your description of that first century makes me hurt just reading it!
