Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I need a bike... FAST

Ok guys im sure you've seen this a thousand times before but i am willing to say im a newb and i need help. I have been frantically looking for a road bike for about a month and im in the stage where i really just want a bike but i know good things come to those who wait. Can anyone point in a direction for a bike i have looked Ebay, Craigslist, Bike shops, and much more. I only have a $350 budget and i really would like to get a newer bike with an aluminum frame and integrated shifters. (downtube shifters just aren't for me) If anyone knows of a place to find a nice road bike or has suggestions as to ones i should look into please tell me. And if you have a bike you could sell i would be interested too but please PM. Im sorry to be such a newb but i am really looking forward to getting into the sport and im really ancy to get off my roadmaster and get on a real bike. I am a 56cm frame by the way.

Three of the options I would recommend you've already mentioned, CL, ebay and bike shops that sell used bikes. Your budget seems realistic for finding a low end, used road bike with Sora level or early 7 or 8 speed brifters. Where do you live? Are you in a high priced bike market like NYC?

If you are just starting off, talk to a local shop that knows what they are doing. Might cost you more than $350 but the advice on fit and setup might be worth it.

If money is your bottom line, go ebay or bikesdrect... but you get what you pay for sometimes.

With 350 you could buy something newer with Sora or 2200 components which wouldn't be worth it in my opinion.

However with 350 you could get some nice older bikes, but they would probably have DT shifters. Best thing to do is be patient and check Craigslist several times a day.

Agreed im not a fan of the sora equipment its better than nothing but i guess i could handle i have checked BD and most of the stuff is windsor or motobecane are these good brands? I live in OH so nothing super expensive but i have checked CL everday multiple times for the last three weeks. I have been looking on ebay but $70 for shipping is money wasted to me. Does anyone know the performance bike chain of dealers i was recommended to them and i was wondering if they could get me a bike for my price range. I went to a bikesource in town and got fitted to a 56 because i was lookin at a 53 and it was too small. So i rode a specialized allez triple but it had sora equipment and it was $850 so i was kinda dissapointed i loved the feel though i dont have near 800 bucks.

buy a nice frameset first, then you can add money to it later with parts and things.

keep an eye on CL -- columbus is a great and very affordable market for bikes. The ONLY way IMO to get the best quality bike in your price range is to get DT shifters. Maybe just change them out eventually. Brifters = ca$h

Sports authority has several road bikes under $350 and also free shipping. Not the best quality and heavy bikes.

Did I miss something? I live in Ohio, too. Are more expensive bikes taxed? Am I going to be thrown into the Scioto river because I spent more? I don't get what living in Ohio has to do with it.

PLEASE use the search engine for the answer to this.

If I were you, I'd pony up another hundred plus some change and see if I can get my hands on a discounted 2009 (or 2008 if they have them) Fuji Newest at Performance Bike. I have one, it costs a fraction of most bikes, and it does the trick.

What the hell makes you people think that if someone is wondering about something they are going to know that it's a topic that is talked about frequently?

You forumists who always ***** about using the search engine are more annoying than the naive people who make you say it. Hey, want an answer to why they don't use the search engine? Search that topic...

Good grief. It's a discussion board.

Ok well thanks rick for the BD post that looks like a pretty solid bike and i think it is one that has free shipping. Sorry i didnt use the search engine just trying to get some fresh users opinions and im sure there is no problem with asking. The reason someone asked where i live is because in some states I.E. California and New York items are generally priced higher. I did not mean to cause people to get all stoked up i only asked a simple question thanks to those who helped and i am looking forward to buying a road bike and joining the fun. I am going to a used bike shop this week so maybe i will have some luck there.

The fact that it's a discussion board is exactly why I suggested he use the search engine. Because this has been discussed ad nauseum already with some pretty solid information provided. In addition, this forum can't seem to keep a Bikes Direct thread civil - so since it's already been discussed thoroughly, and with fairly desireable results in previous threads, why not direct the member to them through a search?

Theres only 1900 pages of threads on here and considering most of the people post about issues pertaining to expierenced bikers because thats what most of them are i would say unless you can direct me to an exact thread i would say my question does not violate anyone's interest's. People come to a discussion board to answer Q's other users have and unless you have the time to look through the first 50 pages of threads and find a topic directly relating to my question i would be happy to hear other suggestions from users who are a little more open-minded and willing to help a fellow biker.
