why all this talk about dropping people

and getting dropped on their every day bike rides?

Apparently I didn't get the memo that every time I get on my bike its supposedly a race against whoever else I encounter on a bike...

My tempo ride might drop others tempo rides... while there's people out there who's tempo rides would put me in hurt and drop me sooner or later.

Maybe my fear of getting dropped is the reason I only ride with my wife. But I thought it had to do with living in a rural area and nobody else out here rides. But I now know it is my fear of being dropped.

This is like the guy who flys by you on the freeway then puts his hazard lights on signifying that he just beat you in a race.

I have only been riding by myself since I started a month ago. I notice that when I see a rider ahead of me I suddenly have the capacity to push myself to catch up. I usually will stay behind them for a bit if there going at a decent speed and maybe have a quick chat at a light to break up the riding then move on. Minus the rambling I think my only cause to drop a rider would be to push myself. I like some competition even if its just in my own head.

Nevermind that the guy might be on mile 75 of his 80 mile ride and you on mile 7 of your 10 mile ride and he/she may not really want to bother with speeding up just because you want some competition.

Getting dropped in a casual setting really doesn't matter and anyone that thinks that it does is totally delusional. I can give you a real life "for instance". About two years ago I was out on an off season training ride with a friend where we were out for a "moderate" effort ride of around 40 miles. In the process we happened to pass a rider WAY better than us who was probably out for a super easy recovery ride. I won't say who it is, but this rider just defended his Mt. Washington hill climb victory and is currently a Jelly-Belly pro. I would be a total idiot to think that in anyway we pwned this guy because we happened to pass him that day. He is so much better rider than I am that I can't even imagine the difference. It ain't a race unless everyone in it says that it is.

Heck, if I show up at the local hammerhead ride and in my training mode I am looking for a moderate steady effort and the thing turns into a prick measurement test with the local hotshots I will be the first guy off the back and saying "see ya next week" because that particular brand of torture was not on my menu for that evening for me. And I don't care if somebody thinks that I couldn't "hang" on that particular ride. While I might have "hung" on that ride it would have gone against what I was trying to do on that particular day.
I'm the world's forgotten boy. The one who's searchin', searchin' to destroy.

Never said anything about them competing with me or their wanting to compete with me. I simply said I like trying to catch up to them. It gives me a reason to push which may be a lack of self motivation on my part.

The dropping or getting dropped doesn't bother my on my rides, just when people on BF get all proud about it because:

I always thought "dropping" was a weak way of stating that you crushed the hopes of someone who (presumably?) wished to keep up with you.

But then I'll never understand how taking a dump became precedent either. Why don't they call it leaving a dump? I mean... you're not really taking it anywhere.

What race do you know ends with you not trying to speed up?
    Excuses for mediocrity......

Reminds me of the time I dropped a 'Vette. (It wasn't moving, but it's not my fault he couldn't HTFU. )

some people ride for this feeling often called "fun" and "enjoyment". not to just perform better in races.

    I doubt that.

You dont aspire to get better at riding than you were two months ago, be it further, faster or longer?

Seriously, did u get dropped today?
I can put an Interval training regime together for you.

isn't the whole idea of a group ride to ride as a group? I can somehwat understand the group slpitting between abilities (depending on size) but dropping some one on a group ride is very rude IMHO. now a training ride is different if you can't hack it too bad.

I have a slightly different question. on my ride saturday here in so jersey I saw something odd (atleast to me) I saw a group ride headed the other way and it was about 20 riders strong but it had redundents in it too. it look real strange and slightly dangerous to me.
Bianchis '87 Sport SX, '90 Proto, '90 Campione del Fausto Giamondi Specialisma Italiano Mundo, '91 Boarala 'cross, '93 Project 3, '86 Volpe, '97 Ti Megatube, , '90 something Vento 603,

Others but still loved,; '80 RIGI, '80 Batavus Professional, '87 Cornelo, '09 Motobecane SS, '?? Jane Doe (still on the drawing board), '90ish Haro Escape
