Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A Couple of things Road cycling related happened today..

So today, I was going to take a 10 mile ride, my first, I know im a noob.

So I get going, with my sufficient water and a oatmeal bar. As I ride my regular starting path, I get going, suddenly I hear a snap, coming from the lower part of the bike. I look at it and you guessed it the chain, broke. Not in many piece, just one of the sections, to me it looks like it snapped at the main part of the chain where the female and male parts are tightened. So I am wondering what happened? I weight 250 lbs. I wonder if it was my fat arse that broke it? The bike I have is a walmart bike, but its pretty damn good if I say so myself, and we will get to more of that in a moment.

Its a KENT GMC Denali bike, 700C. So, I was wondering has this happened to anyone here? Why does this happen?

I called Kent and they are shipping me a new chain as I just bought this bike 2 months ago, so the chain was practically new. But I have road the bike much this summer.

Moving on in the day. I decide to go to A1 Cylcling here in Manassas, Virginia. Its my lbs, ( I am assuming lbs is short for little bike shop, and I know im a newb) And they dont sell Trek bikes, I tell them why not they say, Specialized and Giant are as good or even better. I was like, "o rly", so Lance must be a bum to be riding Trek he should be Specializing. So, I decide im here, might aswell see what 890 bucks gets ya. Retrospecing, I have a 99 dollar 700C Kent bike. So I test ride a $890 Specialized bike, reading the forums, im guessing you know what bike I rode. a Red Specialized Allez bike with Carbon seat post and im guessing stem, or something along those lines. Now I am not trying to be a d-bag, and ive road bikes since a little boy. And to be dead serious, I didnt think that bike was all that great. And for 890 bucks, I was hoping for alot more. I wonder what 3k gets ya. Im going to say the honest truth and hopefully you guys understand, but that Kent bike I bought from walmart is as good maybe even better. And no one on these boards can say anything to change my mind. Since I have ridden both. The only small difference I saw in that Specialized bike was it was alot stiffer, and to me that not a good thing, I like a little wobble when I put all my force on my bike. Plus that bike had slicks, and it wasnt as fast as my kent bike. Maybe I should try out Cannondale and Trek, but those bikes are 3k or 2k right? Specialized is crap IMO. I still have to try out the other elite bikes, but I say no to Allez. Yes to walmart??? btw if you want specs on the bike I ride check it out. Here is a link,https://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=3663046

I bought it at walmart for 99, pwnt the internet there.

Give it a test run if you go to a walmart. You will be surprised. Oh yea the specialized with all that carbon and ultra light aluminum didnt feel as light as the walmart bike I have.

You know, there's an art to trolling, and you just failed miserably at it. Have to be a bit more subtle.

You sold me dude!
What time is the Blue Light special and can I get some extra smiley stickers for the frame?
It,s obvious from what you stated that Lance is not a good shopper.

I am not trying to troll, I am just giving my .02 cents, I even told ya my crap kent bike broke its cheap chain, even with that happening, I still will keep it. I like it that much. Maybe I should drive those more expensive bike more often and maybe I will see why they cost that much, but from about a 10 minute test drive, I did not see why I have to spend 800 to buy the bike. Sometimes it pays to be a cheap bastard like myself. And in this economy my small tip on this site, my make someones day, when they buy the crap kent I bought from lonely walmart. The prove is in test driving both.

In car terms,

I bought a 09 civic when i bought the kent from walmart.

I went in hoping to buy atleast an Acura TL for 800 bucks worth of bike, I ended driving a 09 Camry Hybrid. Thats how deflated I was.

Meh...I'll feed the troll. If you're not riding regularly and strenuously then the benefits of a more expensive bike will be lost on you, the same can be said of a lot of products. Sure there's marketing hype but there are tangible benefits to more expensive bicycles like weight and quality of components; buy a bike that gives you the most for your riding level. As for a Specialized Allez not feeling any lighter than a Kent, well that's a nice bit of comedy there.

You already admitted that your cheap wally world bike has failed. That's what it will continue to do with any serious cycling; Fail.

This is the worst attempt at trolling i've seen in years!

First, you need a story that is 'remotely' believable

Second, thank you for the entertainment

Did you notice on my second post on this thread, I assumed this same thing you posted. Maybe I should'nt have posted what I felt about the expensive bike. Because you do have a point, over the long haul, the bike will last longer and longer rides will be better. I dont ride many 20+ mile rides, so maybe thats why I didnt care for the bike. But from first impressions, I honestly dont see why I have to pay so much for a bike. But quality does come at a price but 8x what I consider a decent bike. Thats just not ride, elite bikes should at most cost like 500 bucks, thats more reasonable and something I would'nt mind spending. But I hope no one thinks im a troll just from my 1 opinion on a 10 minute ride.

I normally don't post on these forums but I have to say this post is hilarious. OP: when you cross the finish line in front of the guys on the Specialized bikes laugh and point and show them the cash you saved.

There is more to a bike than whether Lance rides it. At any given "range" the bikes from various brands are going to have similar characteristics.

people bike for different reasons/purposes. a $3000 racing road bike will not enhance my daily commute experience compared to a $100 hybrid. for fast/endurance group rides, on the other hand...
