Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Everything Breaks - SRAM Rival edition

Pics tell the story. Rear shifter popped off. Purchased new, five months of use, and never crashed. Just plain ole broke.

I'll let you know if they make a warranty replacement a headache.

That sucks. Haven't heard much about SRAM's customer service. That's probably because I haven't heard of much of their stuff breaking. Hope you liked the gear you were in when it broke.

same thing happened to me, but it had a reason before it finally snapped (laid/slid the bike down once on the right side, no direct impacts). sram replaced it no questions asked. shipped through my lbs so i didn't have to pay a thing. took 1 week from the call to receiving the new shifter. full disclosure: i was working for the lbs at the time.

Saw a guy do that to his shifter at downer's grove last weekend. Crappy way to end a national championship race.

i have no illusions that all sram components will break... eventually. the question is, how frequently do they break (e.g., number of failures per thousand sales) and are their road groups more likely to break than the competition (e.g., rival vs ultegra; rival vs chorus)? it's too early to tell.

Sram's warranty replacement was hassle free when I had to replace a Force crankset. I purchased a demo/used Force crankset since I wanted to try 175mm crankarms. Two months later, the pedal on the drive-side crankarm started wobbling and next thing I knew, the threaded insert on the crankarm for the pedal began to loosen and separate from the crankarm. Having lost the receipt, I was afraid Sram would not honor the warranty. After bringing it to a different LBS(closer to home), a quick phonecall to Sram and 4 days later my new Force crankset had arrived. No questions asked, brought in the old one after the replacement had arrived and I was good to go.

SRAM's been good to me, warranty-ing one piece that was defective when I got it, and replacing a piece I blatantly busted myself during installation (and told them I had done so).

That is a weird break though. It looks like the metal bits actually broke?

SRAM has not been good to me (may be my LBS), I was riding and bent two teeth (non sequential teeth) on the big chain ring [sprinting, not crashing] which is not warrantied. I can see why they wouldn't from people curbing their bikes but annoying none-the-less.

That's what I'm hoping to hear. One week to being back in action.

Indeed it does. If the left broke in a matching fashion I'd have quite the high zoot fixed gear brake levers.

I figure it all breaks. Not that part of me didn't say, "next time I'm buying Campy or Shimano," on the painfully hilly 25+ mile ride home with only two gears.

Ill say it again, cheap, light and reliable all dont go together. You gotta pick two out of three.

Since they are broken why dont you get SHimano Ultegra shifters
Arent they suppose to be compatible?

We rode Shimano very hard in South Africa where we dont have fancy replacement warranties and Shimano stuff never broke. People snapped chains and handlebars before the groupset broke.

If its under warrenty i guess getting it replaced makes sense. Hopefully it was just that set that was defective.

Report how it goes. Im sure people would like a follow up on how well it is handled.

What happened to the RD cable when the shift paddle broke? You had no tools? No way to tie, stretch or lengthen the RD cable so you could ride home on a more reasonable gear?

I had to warranty my left shifter as soon as I got it installed, they didn't even question it. SRAM was no problem but I didn't have a LBS to handle the warranty claim. That was the hard part for me, finding someone to receive the package. I actually had the left shifter 'bend' or something to the point that it stretched further than the brake lever. SRAM customer service is awesome and you should have no problems at all..

SRAM's warranty is painless as long as you bought the stuff from someone who can actually warranty it. I bought a Red groupset, the big chain ring was ruined in about 10 days, I was stuck with it. Had to buy a new one out of pocket. The money I saved but it from a grey market source went right out the window when I had to buy a new chainring.

Ive warrantied my Force stuff through the shop I bought it from and it went off without a hitch. Quick turnaround and no questions asked basically.

they're not. Shimano shifters go with Shimano RD, and SRAM shifters must go with SRAM RD.

That may have been me, but I crashed, so I just sucked it up and bought a new one. I did not go down hard, just bad luck with what I hit. I still love the shifters.
