No, one of the reasons why I love Campy is that you have ability to drop multiple gears at a time. Push down in a long through and you have up to 5 gears lower (or is it 4.. can't remember). This is true for Record and Chorus, but I think when you go "below" these two, you have the single gear only.

The thumb shifter on all new Campy shifters enables the mutiple shift. It operates basically as a ratchet mechanism. One gear = one click. Five clicks = five gears.
Its perfect for heading up a hill. All you need to do is mash both thumb levers. Drops it to the small ring and drops it enough on the rear cog to smoothly transition into climbing.
In the previous generation, there were certain levels (Veloce and Centaur) that adopted the Escape mechanism, which was basically one thumb push per shift, without the ability to ratchet through the cassette.

The multiple shifts are really handy on our tandem when I accidently drop from our 48 to our 24 chainring at the bottom of a hill. A quick jab of the right thumb and we're in something like a reasonable gear.

My LBS loaned me an Escape shifter when mine was waiting for replacement springs. I didn't like it, probably because I'm used to the multiple shifts, and I like the definite clicks of the 2006 mechanism. Compact cranks with a wide range cog, like 12-25, need to shift 2 or 3 gears in the back when slowing down and shifting to the 34 chainring. It's nice to do it with one push of each thumb.
But, in the drops, I sometimes shift twice when I only wanted one gear. It's harder to use just the right thumb pressure from the drops. So with a single shift modification, when the pros are sprinting to the finish, they could mash the thumb lever hard, without getting two shifts.

Multiple upshift is the best thing about Campy but if you're sprinting in the drops it can be tricky to get a single upshift.

All levels of '09 Campy have the new ultrashift mechanism with the new brake hood and lever, although Campy sells two versions of the cheapest Veloce. They retained the escape version with the old brake hood design and still offer it in Veloce. I suspect these would be for cheaper OEM applications.
The "modified" shifter that was shown would be an '07-'08 escape mechanism shifter with Record brake levers added to disguise it.
As already noted, the '09 shifters can make 5 shifts with one push of the button and prior to that, they could run through all 9 shifts.
